📚This week in the Nest room, the children have been exploring some of our core books through a range of sensory and creative activities.
🐯'Whose Stripes?'
The children explored different stripe patterns through painting, experimenting with lines, colours and mark making.
👣'Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes'
The children explored making prints with their hands and feet, pressing their fingers and toes into playdough and creating hand and footprint artwork.
🌙'Goodnight Moon'
The children explored a moon-themed gloop sensory tray and used stars to create different shapes and patterns in paint.
These activities helped bring familiar stories into the children’s play, supporting sensory exploration, creativity, communication and early literacy skills. 📚

👣This week at Guardian House, the children have been exploring their senses through a fun barefoot sensory walk!
The children explored a range of different textures, including sand, cotton wool, rice, bubble wrap and jelly snow. Our older children were encouraged to explore with their eyes covered, helping them focus on their other senses, while our younger children explored with their eyes uncovered.
The children used words such as “soft,” “squishy,” “cold” and “crunchy” to describe what they could feel, with one child saying the rice felt like “sprinkles!” building on their language.
They also listened carefully to the different sounds the materials made as they walked, especially the popping bubble wrap and crunchy ice!
This activity supported the children’s sensory awareness, communication, confidence and coordination, while encouraging them to explore and describe the world around them using their senses👣

This week, the children explored the fascinating world of bugs and beetles 🐞🪲 as we followed their interest in living things and created a variety of bug hunt sensory trays! 🌿🔍

The children used their senses to explore the different trays, feeling the soft sand 🏖️ and rough bark 🌳 as they investigated the bugs and their various environments. Throughout the activity, they developed their speech and language skills by using descriptive and action words 🗣️ to communicate what they could feel and describe what they were doing as they explored.

The children also discovered tweezers 🥢 and used them to carefully pinch and move pieces of bark from underneath the spider’s web 🕷️🕸️. This helped to strengthen their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration and control ✋👀.

Using magnifying glasses 🔎, the children took a closer look at the bugs, noticing their different features, shapes and colours 🌈. They were excited to learn the names of the different creatures, encouraging curiosity, observation skills and the development of new vocabulary 📚✨.

This engaging sensory experience provided wonderful opportunities for the children to explore, investigate and learn about the natural world 🌎🌱 while developing their communication, physical and cognitive skills. 🧠💬💪

This week in Oak Room 🌳, we have been exploring our fine and gross motor skills through a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to help build and develop these important skills. 💪🧠

We started the week by creating a giant obstacle course and ‘spider’s web’ in the garden. 🕷️🌿 The children used their problem-solving skills to work out how to manoeuvre in and out of the fabric, while using their arms to help them balance as they carefully crossed the beams. ⚖️🤸‍♀️

Inside, the children explored a water tray with tape placed across the top. 💦🚗 They carefully moved the cars along the ‘road’, using their concentration, coordination and fine motor skills to prevent the cars from falling into the water underneath. 🖐️👀

It has been lovely to see the children challenging themselves, developing their coordination and building confidence as they explored different ways to move and balance. 🌟👏💛

This week at South Hill we have been exploring our emotions and how to express ourselves.
The children have enjoyed looking at different emotions in different ways and trying to recreate them, this leading them to talk about how they may be feeling. "When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting and less scary - Fred Rogers"

To celebrate World Picture Day, the children in the Oak Room took part in a variety of fun activities exploring photos and pictures.

The children began the week with our school leavers, who enjoyed walking around the garden with an iPad. They were given the opportunity to take photographs of anything that caught their attention, including leaves, the fence and the water tray. This encouraged the children to look closely at their surroundings and make independent choices about what they wanted to capture.

Back in the room, the children explored our pretend cameras, taking turns to photograph their friends and practising saying, “Cheese!” They enjoyed role-playing as photographers and developing their confidence as they interacted with one another.

The children also enjoyed colouring their own picture frames and then adding flowers to create beautiful flower collage pictures. They used a variety of colours and natural materials to make each collage unique and personal.

To finish the week, the children used photographs taken by real photographers as inspiration to create their own pictures of real-life objects and scenes. They experimented with a variety of creative resources to bring their ideas to life.

Below are some of the wonderful photographs our school leavers took during their garden adventure!
