How Lack Of Alignment Is Costing You Thousands Every Single Year

If you wait until the perfect legal role comes along where you feel fulfilled and excited about your work, it will cost you more than just peace of mind.

That's because when you're not in the role or environment that fits YOU best, your ability to drive forward towards promotion and salary increases is so much harder.

➡️ Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying all lawyers are sitting in roles they hate or dislike.

But many are doing work they don't enjoy or find fulfilling, and they're stuck there because they don't know how to take a different path that might lead them to a more exciting place.

And I get it - the legal field is highly structured. You need to become a lawyer, pass the bar exam, hopefully get hired as an associate at a good firm… but then what? Where do you go from there? How can you switch paths if you think the one you're on isn't right for you (or if it's starting to get a little boring)?

I believe that we should all be doing work that fulfills us—work that we like doing and feel good about in our hearts.

When we choose roles we love, we're happier people and we make better decisions—and we end up making more money!

How This Lawyer Pivoted Into An Unconventional Legal Role That Is Perfect For Her

I get excited every time one of my clients land a new role, but I was particularly touched by Liz's journey. She was diligent in figuring out what the best next move would be for HER.

Liz’s career goal was clear:

✅ Work directly with clients
✅ Feel fulfilled rather than drained
✅ Improve her mindset and approach

Since this is outside of traditional legal roles, Liz knew it would not be easy!

However, she knew it would be possible...

I'm so excited to share with you a way to make your job search easier and more effective.

I’ll give you the insights of the exact steps and tips she used to go from feeling stuck in a seemingly good role to working at a company that really values her— in just over 6 months.

Your Dream Career is A LOT Closer Than You Think

Why Your Dream Career is A LOT Closer Than You Think

❓ When you hear the term career change, do you think about those people who make radical career changes?

Banker to Baker, Project Manager to Musician, Lawyer to Property Developer…

It doesn’t have to be this way...

What about the more subtle career changes that can make a world of difference to the way you feel about the work that you do? 🤔

Sometimes we are in the right career, at the right place, and at the right time in our lives... but we are missing this subtle pivot in order to feel like we are living our dream.

Your Experience Can Be Leveraged To Make A Career Change Without Retraining

Your Existing Experience Can Be Leveraged To Make A Change Without Retraining

😬 It surprises me how often talented female lawyers downplay their expertise or the value they bring to their firm or clients.

Too often “we” statements are used, when the focus should be on what contribution “you” actually made.

We often want to be team players and dedicate our work to the “bigger picture”, or to the company but there is a thin line between being a good team player for the company, and articulating the value that you specifically contribute.

When you take the time to zoom in and understand what you bring to the table, you will find it much easier to see how your existing experience can be leveraged and used as a tool to transition into a more meaningful role.

3 Ways To Get Recognition For The Amazing Job You Are Already Doing

Modesty is the thief of progress for female lawyers.

Feeling overlooked and undervalued is a by product of not articulating the value that you are bringing enough.

Before seeking 👀 alternative opportunities inside and outside of the law because you are unhappy where you are...

What if you could start getting more recognition that you are doing right now? How would that make a difference to way you are feeling about work right now.

Stop seeking career change advice from the wrong people

When considering what to do next with your career, it is common to seek outside advice from peers, friends, family, recruiters.

Understandable when you feel like you are at a cross-roads, BUT it is important to realise that the advice that you are receiving may be doing a lot more harm than good.

Join me on this live stream, as I share when it makes sense to be seeking advice and what you need to be mindful of when assessing your options.

‎The Career Change Maker Podcast: # 164 Do You Want More Than A Role That Looks Good On Paper on Apple Podcasts

I often have conversations with people who are contemplating some kind of move in their careers...

.. and what I hear is the FRUSTRATION 😩 that people find themselves in around their careers and where they feel they SHOULD BE at this stage in their career.

We're used to looking at the benchmark of what everyone else is doing, as the standard.

Whilst it's great to be able to acknowledge what peers are doing, if that pathway isn't right for you, this shouldn't determine your career choices!

My encouragement to you today is to focus on WHAT it is YOU WANT to do and WHY.

That shifts things.

If you're unclear on what the next step is, start with why you are unhappy where you are. That's the first thing that can help you to start determining where you should move to.

Listen to me 🔊 - you deserve to be happy!

That's why I KNOW you deserve a better role at work - one where you feel fulfilled, are performing to the best of your capability and know that you're creating an impact!

After all, your aim in life is not to attain some imaginary ideal but to fully find and own your gifts.

The reason why you feel unhappy is likely to be because there's a misalignment between the work that you're doing on a day-to-day basis and who you are as a person.

There's a misalignment between what's required of you, and who you are naturally... and when there is that misalignment, then there's tension!

Nothing is permanent. Things change, you change, value shifts and perspectives change.

Just because a decision that you made years ago was made, it doesn't mean that you have to stay there. It doesn't mean that you can't transition, and do something different.

So, what is it that would make the YOU you are today happy?

Take some time to discover that by listening to my podcast episode on Why You Deserve A Better Role So You Can Stop Feeling Unhappy At Work - link in the comments.

❓ Do you want to know the number one Career Lesson I wish I had learned earlier?

This came up in a few conversations that I've had recently, so I decided to share it in this week's episode of the Career Change Maker Podcast.

These are lessons that I've been reflecting on. starting in my legal career and then how that's translated to where I am now, in my role as an Executive Career Coach.

When I first started as a lawyer, I felt like I had no idea what I was doing (like so many of us when we first start in our careers!). 🤔

In my journey, the moment when I had the time to make that reflection was when I went on maternity leave.

I started asking myself the tough questions about what I actually wanted... and it was hard to answer!

Listen in to this podcast to hear my journey and the lessons I learnt along the way.

💞 💞 It is a new season!

The brand new Career Change Maker website is now live.

Thank you to those of you who commented on photos to include on the site. I went with the majority vote for the home page and incorporated some of the other images on other pages.

Letting go of my first business name is not easy. Through this process I realised how attached I was to it. It took me almost a year to execute on this rebrand. The resistance was real. Change can be exciting and hard at the same time.

In your career you go through seasons, sometimes making a change is the best next step. Just because you feel a way about making the change, doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. Give yourself time to process, draw out your lessons learned and lean into the reason why the change makes sense for you now.

On the other side of fear and resistance is possibility!! I am so excited about what is come this year and supporting the career change makers that will be on the ride with me.

It is a new season for me, what about you?

I am making an exciting transition to a new brand name today!!

Episode 159: How to Position Yourself for Better Career Opportunities in 2022 - LightBox Coaching

Are you ready to make 2022 YOUR year and take control of your career?

The beginning of the year is a great time to look at the months ahead:

✅ What resolutions you want to set

✅ What new habits you want to form

✅ Where you want to be this time next year…

So in my latest podcast episode, I discuss what you can do to position yourself for better career opportunities this year.

I also share how you can be approaching things differently when it comes to your career and career development.

This episode is packed full of insights on what you can really do to set yourself up for career success this year!

A few things you will learn:

- Research has shown that only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions will follow through and be successful on those – I share three things that you should be focused on throughout the year when it comes to your career development.

- If you fail to plan, you plan to fail - If you don't have a plan, you cannot make it a reality. Having a plan, taking the time to map out, and putting the plan in place so that you can be successful is SO important.

- A bonus thing you can do - Surround yourself with people who are doing what it is you want to do, or who are on the journey. Getting into a community is super important as that is going to accelerate your results.

➡️ January 2021 - I was sole legal counsel at a start up

➡️ January 2022 - I am running my own business, my own start up.

People often say that it was very brave of me to leave my legal career of 10 years.

Truth Moment: It doesn't always feel brave, sometimes it feels a little crazy

The emotional rollercoaster of running a business is something I hadn't anticipated.

But the thing that makes going through a "risky" career transition worth it is....

📍 ALIGNMENT

My strengths, interests, mission and motivation are all very much aligned with the work that I GET TO DO each and everyday.

I no longer feel like a square peg in a round hole...I feel like a round peg in a round hole that is expanding as my comfort zone expands.

On the other side of career change is not your destination, its the beginning of your new journey where you get to grow and expand into the future leader that you are meant to be.

🗣️ A dream role isn't a dream role if it is not right for YOU.

I see too many talented women sitting in the wrong roles, that will not lead them to the place of impact that they desire.

When you have people sitting in the wrong roles, here’s what you get:

❌ Frustration
❌ Disengagement
❌ Boredom
❌ Resentment

If we can flip this and get more people to transition into the right roles – EVERYONE WINS! The organisation wins, the individual wins, the families of the individuals win.

My mission – to empower female professionals take control of their careers and step into roles that aligned with their strengths and values.

😆 When I received this message, I was beyond excited.

When I started working with this client she was lacking clarity and direction.

She had a successful legal career and by everyone else's standards she was doing brilliantly, but internally she felt frustrated.

She knew that there was misalignment between what she was doing and what she knew to be true about where she should be in her career.

It was so awesome to watch her get clear on what she really wanted and fully lean into her strengths.

The process I guide clients through requires openness and vulnerability.

This client fully embraced that.

💫 Her transformation has been phenomenal. Not only has she landed an amazing FLEXIBLE opportunity that is FULLY aligned with who she is as a person, she has changed as a person.

💫 She is showing up with more conviction and more confidence in all aspects of her life.

📌 When you take ownership of your career, there are ripple effects in every area of your life.

Ready change career direction and land your dream role?

LightBox Coaching is on a mission to help ambitious women land dream roles faster and easier.

With our proven framework and coaching methodology, we will help you discover what you really want to do, leverage your existing experience and land an ideal role....all without having to retrain or accept a pay cut.
