Addressing a growing welfare concern in contact and collision sports, this project will explore how students balance academic and athletic demands following head impacts.
While Return-to-Sport protocols are well established, approaches to Return-to-Learn remain underdeveloped. This project will take an integrated approach, examining biomechanical, physiological, and behavioural aspects of concussion recovery. Using applied, real-world settings, the research will assess sensorimotor function alongside symptoms and academic outcomes. Working with key stakeholders, the project will develop and evaluate a practical, evidence-based Return-to-Learn framework. It will also explore lived experiences of recovery and investigate how factors such as neurodivergence may influence recovery trajectories. Using large-scale real-world datasets from canine and equine populations, the research will examine how factors such as diet, breed, age, and management influence microbiome composition, and how these patterns connect to owner-reported behavioural phenotypes. The project will also identify shared and species-specific microbiome–behaviour relationships in dogs and horses, helping to advance our understanding of animal welfare and performance.
