Denmark Road High School

Denmark Road High School Denmark Road High School, Gloucester is the highest performing girls’ grammar school in Gloucester Denmark Road High School is at the heart of Gloucester City.

We are the highest performing girls’ grammar school in Gloucestershire and we welcome boys into the Sixth Form. The stunning setting of Gloucester Cathedral welcomes our students and parents for Honour's Evening. This event recognises the outstanding achievements our students have made in Academics, Sports, STEM and the Arts during the academic year. The Cathedral also hosts our Annual Charity Concert and our Christmas Carol Service. We value our role in the community through the contributions our students make to local charities and causes. We are proud our students welcome residents of local nursing homes to a tea party at the school. Other students volunteer at food banks and homeless shelters while the students of local primary schools benefit from the support with their reading and languages during our regular student visits. We regularly highlight and support local charities through various fundraising events throughout the school year. Our Sixth Form students certainly benefit from our close proximity to the city centre and Gloucester Quays with its multiple shopping and cafe options. Denmark Road High School is outward-looking, forward-thinking, community focussed and will always be at the Heart of the City. We take 150 girls into Year 7 who join us from Gloucester City, the county as well as beyond. Currently, we have 50 boys in our Sixth Form but we are expanding our provision for boys at this level.

Year 11 Drama students were busy completing their GCSE Component 1 Practicals last week. 🎭 We saw an excellent range of mature, sophisticated performances inspired by practitioners Berthold Brecht or Emma Rice. Well done to all involved.

Earlier this week our Facebook followers helped us reunite Mel Glass with his letter found by students in 11K on our walk through Gloucester. Mel visited us to collect the letter and stopped to give 11K an insight into the history of the ‘ordinary’ bicycle, known as the penny farthing, and how it was particularly important for women. Sharing in some of Mel’s enthusiasm for the penny farthing Miss Giblin and Mr Brown were lucky enough to have a go!

Looking for a school place for Year 7 in 2027 or 2028? We’re excited to welcome you next week! 🤗

Searching for a Penny Farthing Rider! 🚲
While waiting at her checkpoint in the Quays on Friday, Mrs Cheslin had the unique opportunity to have a go on a penny farthing!

A short while later, students in 11K spotted a gentleman riding a penny farthing through Kingsholm. As he passed by, he accidentally dropped an item in the road. The students quickly picked it up and did their best to catch him, but the penny farthing proved a little too speedy! We would love to reunite the rider with his lost property.

So, could the item belong to the gentleman pictured here? Or were there multiple penny farthing riders out and about in Gloucester last Friday? 🤔

If you are the rider in the photo, or if you know how we can contact him, please get in touch. The students in 11K would be delighted to return his missing item.

Please feel free to share this post to help us find him!
