Week 3 of the holidays was Seaside Week! 🌊🐚☀️
What an absolutely gorgeous week we had! We brought all the fun of the seaside to Little Peas, with sand, shells, water, windmills, beach balls, ice cream and even our very own trip to the beach!
A little while ago, when I asked the children what they would really like to do during the holidays, one of their requests was to go on a bus! 🚌 So a trip to Quays Beach gave us the perfect opportunity to combine their bus adventure with our seaside theme.
The children absolutely loved it. There was so much to take in along the way and, when we arrived, the sights, sounds and smells made it feel like a proper little seaside adventure. 🎡 They were fascinated by the Ferris wheel, the busy food stalls and everything happening around them. Of course, no trip to the seaside would be complete without an ice cream treat! 🍦
It was lovely because the whole experience was so relevant to the children too, with many of them having their own seaside holidays around this time of year. Experiences like this give children so much to talk about, helping them connect what we do at Little Peas with their own lives and family adventures.
We played in the sand, explored its texture and even made sand angels! 😄
Back at Little Peas, Seaside Week continued. The sandpit had a lovely top-up of fresh sand along with new buckets and spades, which were very enthusiastically put to work! Digging, filling, tipping, scooping and transporting sand might look like simple play, but there is so much learning happening - strengthening little hands and arms, developing coordination, experimenting with capacity and encouraging lots of imaginative and cooperative play.
Our colourful windmills were another huge hit.
The children quickly discovered that they could make them spin by blowing on them and experimented with how hard they needed to blow. Lots of lovely investigation, cause and effect and , without even realising it, some great oral motor practice too!
We also created some truly beautiful seaside canvases. 🎨 Each child began with watercolours before adding sand, shells, stones and different materials to create their own multimedia seaside artwork. I loved how intricate they became and, although everyone had access to the same resources, every single picture was completely different. They really were beautiful and unique little pieces of art.
Andy had also been busy making some wooden seaside shapes for the children, which they decorated themselves before taking them home. Other children continued with their shell painting and making little seaside ornaments, so there were lots of lovely treasures heading home this week! 🐚
And naturally, Seaside Week needed plenty of silliness and movement too! We put on our Hawaiian flower necklaces, turned up the music and danced around, played with colourful beach balls, watched our windmills whizz round and ran squealing through the sprinklers. 🌺🏖️💦
There was so much packed into this week - new experiences, creativity, sensory play, physical activity, exploring the world around us and, most importantly, lots and lots of fun.
