Split vowel digraphs are a funny lot - I like to tell the children they are two cheeky letters who can't be trusted to sit together. Instead they stay apart with another letter in the middle - but they still work together and "hold hands" to make one long vowel sound! 🤣
Add the /e/ changes the vowel sound from short to long.
