Remembering our allies in the French Resistance.
Marie Hackin was an archaeologist and fighter for the French Resistance. Marie enlisted in the Free French Forces on December 26, 1940, with the rank of second lieutenant. She took part in the organisation of the Female Corps of Free France. Marie organised the female sector of the Free France and was one of the six women recognised with the Companion of the Liberation for her heroism.
Accompanying her husband, in charge of the Department of External Affairs, on a long mission to India, she embarked on February 20, 1941. The freighter carrying them, the Jonathan Holt, was torpedoed by the Germans on February 24, 1941. Marie died aged 35-years-old.
