🌿 New blog post — and a new film to go with it. 📖🎬
Somewhere beneath the surface lie the parts of ourselves we buried to stay safe. 💛
This post is about Archaeology — the fourth of the five Domains in the Anastasis model. It is about three intertwined processes: regulation, reclamation, and discovery. 🌿
I use a simple traffic-light picture. 🚦
Red is clear threat — fight, flight, freeze. Amber is danger — the body tenses, digestion and immunity disrupted, focus narrows. Green is safety — relaxed, relational, reciprocal, with full access to all our faculties. And it is precisely this green state that so many survivors almost never reach — because they are living permanently on amber alert.
Much of the regulation work is helping a nervous system that has forgotten green slowly learn the way back to it. ✨
Through years of danger, we learn to bury the parts of ourselves that were criticised, ridiculed, or got us into trouble. Reclamation is going back for them. Welcoming the exiled parts of the Committee back to the table. Discovering, sometimes, treasure we did not expect. 🌟
A gentle honesty from the post: this often feels, at first, like getting worse rather than better. A nervous system that has been numb for years does not come back online comfortably. As sensation returns, so does the awareness of pain the numbness was muffling. But the returning feeling — uncomfortable as it is — is the very evidence that the system is healing. 💛
"It hurts me nice," as a dear friend once said. Learning to tell the good pain of growth from the bad pain of harm is one of the genuine skills of this Domain.
