*Part III: The Legacy of Mu’awiyah (رضى الله عنه)*

Last week, we explored the events surrounding the appointment of Umar (RA) and how he transformed the small Muslim Caliphate into a vast and flourishing civilisation. His military expansions into the North, East and West, and liberation of these lands from the oppression of the Byzantine and Sassanid rule, as well as his exemplary character and social and welfare reforms made him beloved to the Muslims, but only kindled the fire of enmity in the enemies of Allāh and His messenger and the believers.
We also saw how the Ahlul Bayt and Banu Hashim were among the closest advisors of Umar (RA), guiding him through the perilous circumstances that surrounded him from all sides. This was the one Ummah which had the men built by the Prophet ﷺ, who**,** with the support of his family, laid the foundations for the greatest empire the world would ever see, spanning from Spain to China in later generations.
However, the decree of Allāh will always come to pass, and the same generosity that Umar (RA) had shown to his enemies created an opportunity for them to plot against him, ultimately resulting in his assassination at the hands of Abu Lu’lu’ Feroz the Persian, who, after fatally wounding Umar (RA), took his own life. We saw how the figure of Abu Lu’lu’ is still the subject of sectarian tension in the modern Iranian State, where a shrine stands commemorating the killer of the one who rests besides the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
After him, ʿUthman (RA) took up the mantle, guiding the Muslim Empire forwards whilst navigating the thick clouds of propaganda that had begun to be stirred in the corners of the state, fomented by false rumours by the hypocrites and agitators, as well as external subversion by the remnants of the Byzantine and Sassanid empires, in a desperate attempt to reclaim their lost glory.
This week, we will see how these uprisings resulted in the cold blooded martyrdom of Uthman (RA); we will examine those responsible for the assassinations of Caliph Umar (RA) and Caliph Uthman (RA), learn about their tactics, and explore how Ali (RA) volunteered to face the challenge that few were willing - or able - to take on. May Allah ﷻ be pleased with them all.
