PhD position in avian population ecology (100%)
What we offer
A four-year PhD position in avian population ecology, fully funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The main goal of the project is to advance landscape demography, i.e., to make progress in our understanding of how local demographic processes combine and scale up to govern population changes at larger spatial scales.
The task of the PhD is the development of methods to assess the impact of demographic processes at different spatial scales on population processes at larger, e.g., national, spatial scales. The methods will be tested on simulated data and then applied to white stork and/or kestrel data sets analyzed with spatially integrated population models. The analytics developed and the knowledge gained from the proposed research are highly relevant to population ecology in general, and conservation and management in particular. In addition to Schaub, the PhD student will collaborate closely with a postdoctoral researcher working on the same project.
Requirements
Applicants must have an MSc or equivalent degree in biology, a related field with a focus on ecology, or statistics. The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and in a team, have excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and strong skills in statistical modeling and computation (e.g. in R, Python, Julia). We also expect knowledge in Bayesian inference and the necessary software (e.g. NIMBLE) or else a strong motivation to get well-versed in both soon. No field work is performed during this PhD.
The ideal starting date is 1 January 2024. Salary is in accordance with the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation (www.snf.ch) and the Swiss Ornithological Institute.
Application and contact
The Swiss Ornithological Institute is committed to promoting diversity and looks forward to receiving applications from as many qualified individuals as possible. For more details on the position, please contact Michael Schaub, head of the Population Biology unit (reachable from 1st of August).
We look forward to receiving your online application by 31 August 2023. Please upload your application documents (cover letter with statement of motivation [in English], CV, list of publications, academic transcripts and copies of diploma, contact details of 2-3 references) in a single pdf file to https://my.jobalino.ch/de/jobpreview/5492. Interviews for invited applicants are expected to take place from 18-20 September 2023.

WildHealthNet: A collaborative and evidence-based approach to sustainable wildlife health surveillance
We are seeking a highly motivated and energetic individual to join a multi-disciplinary research group on global wildlife health surveillance. This position is based at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Calgary and is funded by the Science, Nature, and People Partnership (SNAPP). The successful applicant will work under the primary supervision of Dr. Mathieu Pruvot (https://vet.ucalgary.ca/contact-us/mathieu-pruvot) and Dr. Sarah Olson (Wildlife Conservation Society, Director of Health Research).
Project background: From the devastating effects of infectious disease of wildlife (e.g., fungal diseases), to spillover of livestock pathogens into wildlife (e.g., African Swine Fever), to the emergence of wildlife pathogens into humans (e.g., COVID-19), wildlife health surveillance has relevance to ecosystem, livestock, and human health. However, wildlife health surveillance is lacking on a global scale, with most efforts in lower and middle income countries (LMICs) limited in scope and duration. New cross-sectoral and trans-disciplinary approaches are needed to implement effective and sustainable wildlife health surveillance at global scale. Several actors are holding part of the solution (through international frameworks, data management systems, technical support and training), but very few are able to meet the challenge of providing locally relevant solutions that can be scaled globally. A collaborative and evidence-based approach is urgently needed. This project aims to respond to this need through data synthesis and policy development to facilitate prioritization and coordination across global stakeholders, and via the creation of the WildHealthNet Consortium SNAPP (https://snappartnership.net/) working group.
Position: We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to work alongside the SNAPP working group, advance the data synthesis priorities identified by the working group, and support the working group in the production of tangible outcomes and outputs. It is expected that data synthesis efforts will focus on prioritization of surveillance targets and strategies by synthesizing data on health impacts on wildlife, existing systems, detection bias, and socio-ecological interfaces and practices with high spillover risks. Policy objectives include 1) the co-development of a theory of change that connects international frameworks to the practical implementation of wildlife surveillance systems and 2) formalizing the consortium and establish a partnership agreement outlining how stakeholders work together in the long term.
Requirements: This research will require a solid foundation in epidemiological surveillance and One Health, a broad understanding of determinants of wildlife health, familiarity with the methods and challenges of wildlife health surveillance, strong skills in quantitative ecology, strong cultural competencies and cultural humility, inter-disciplinary communication skills, and an interest in science-to-policy translation. The PDF will coordinate and execute extensive collaborative research, workshops, and meetings with multiple international partners, so interpersonal communication and organizational skills are essential.
Salary: Salary is CAD$50,000/year for 2 years plus benefits.
Application Deadline: Applications will be reviewed immediately with the intent of filling the position as soon as possible.
Email a letter of introduction describing your research interests, experience, and motivation for applying to this position, as well as a current CV, a copy of transcripts, and 3 references to:

All UK residents and citizens:
There's now a petition to try and force the government to subject the decision to cut the funding for Global Health research and other overseas research to a full Parliament scrutiny.
If you wanna sign, and make your colleagues and friends sign, that'd be much appreciated
Petition: Revoke Government cuts to global health research We urge the government to reconsider the decision to significantly reduce the Official Development Assistance (ODA) funds for global health research and development. The decision to suspend the commitment to invest 0.7 per cent of GNI on ODA must be subject to full Parliamentary scrutiny.
Guys we've been asked by one of our funders to give a quote about SymBioSE 2019 by someone who benefited from it (as in someone who participated) that they can use publicly.
If you would like to type a statement in the comment how you benefitted from this year's SymBioSE, it would be really helpful!!
Thanks!
Certificates of participation are out!
Check your emails and let us know should there be problems with it.
