From Dunbar, 18-year-old oboist Alasdair Cottee studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Junior Department and performs with both the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and as Principal Oboe of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
Alasdair explains that he "chose to play Vaughan Williams’s Oboe Concerto (first movement) because it was one of the first concertos I learnt on the oboe, and it’s a real dream of mine to play it with a professional orchestra."

Go Dance 2026! Our Young Ballet Company had a brilliant time opening the Wednesday evening show at the Theatre Royal Glasgow🙌🏻🩰👏🏻
What a week our Junior Conservatoire student had as part of this brilliant collaboration with The Mackintosh Foundation unwrapping and performing Les Misérables over the Easter break.
Experiences like this, learning from industry professionals and collaborating across the RCS community, are what make RCS such a unique place to learn and grow.
A truly special project for everyone involved! 🎵✨

Roseanna enjoyed a wonderful ballet Easter course with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
She took daily ballet, jazz and creative sessions – and loved her hair and Swan Lake make up session with former Scottish Ballet Principal dancer, Bethany Kingsley Garner, on the last day! 💙
Roseanna lives on a Scottish island and our live online classes mean that she can pursue her love of ballet, training multiple times a week with us – and take part in exciting opportinities such as this!

We are absolutely delighted to celebrate an outstanding achievement by Daniel Lindsay, one of our P7 Pre-Junior students.
After winning the RCS Junior Conservatoire Beethoven Piano Prize earlier this term, Daniel (pictured centre) went on to represent the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland at the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Intercollegiate Competition where he was awarded 2nd place!
This is a remarkable accomplishment in its own right but even more so given that Daniel is just 11 years old. To perform and be recognised at this level among older peers is truly exceptional.
Many congratulations, Daniel, we are all incredibly proud of you and look forward to seeing what you do next. 🎹✨

Fantastic news for Junior Conservatoire oboist Alasdair Cottee, who has been named a finalist in BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Classical Musician of the Year 2026 👏🎵💫
Alasdair (pictured on the left) will perform at the grand final at Glasgow’s City Halls on 30 May with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, in front of a live audience and judging panel.
It’s great to see strong RCS connections across the final, with pianist Anastasia-Maria Barbu (BMus, RCS School of Music) and cellist Finn Mannion (former Junior Conservatoire student) joining Alasdair in this outstanding line-up.
Wishing Alasdair every success for the final – we’ll be cheering you on!
