”Pareidolia” comes from our instinctual protection mechanism in identifying predators or enemies. It was safer for the ancestors we evolved from to assume they see a face, even where there may be none.

It is often hypothesised that people who believe in the supernatural, are more prone to pareidolia as we are on higher alert for danger, so more likely to spot something that isn’t there. Fascinating & food for thought for serious evidence based investigators.
