EXTENDED DEADLINE: 06/09/2024 at 17:00

We’re looking to welcome a new Technical Project Co-ordinator to our team.

The Technical Project Co-ordinator will work as part of our small, dedicated technical team which is responsible for the day-to-day running of GSS production facilities and the delivery of all commercial fabrication projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for co-ordinating and developing GSS Fabrication as the commercial arm of Glasgow Sculpture Studios, including identifying potential clients and new markets and actively promoting GSS services. This role works closely with and is line-managed by the Production Facility Manager, including regular meetings to discuss workload progression and performance.

As part of a small team, the role also requires flexible and adaptable working to support projects as needed, working together with other departments in the team (e.g. Operations; Learning & Engagement) to successfully deliver wider GSS projects. Appropriate training will be provided as required and as relevant to the role.

Response to the closure of Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals:

GSS is shocked by news from Creative Scotland this week of the cancellation of the Open Fund for Individuals, due to the funding allocated no longer being available from the Scottish Government.

Artists are integral to Scotland’s cultural landscape. This fund is essential to support career development, the production of new artworks and public engagement. Closure of this fund will have an immediate and devastating impact on many artists based in Scotland, putting their livelihoods at risk. Scottish communities will be deprived of valuable cultural experiences and wide-reaching, positive social impacts around wellbeing, skills development and community connectivity. The international reach of Scotland’s creative outputs will be diminished.

We stand in solidarity with our artist community to call for this fund to be urgently reinstated.

Free workshop announcement!!

ACS GSS Graduate Fellow Wenyi Pan is holding a free ‘Ceramic Collage Workshop’ with support from Glasgow-based artist, Siqi Yang at GSS.

The Workshop will take place in Project Room 1, Glasgow Sculpture Studios, on 27th August (Tuesday) from 1-5 pm.

Participants will be able to learn to make various patterned pieces by collaging different pre-dyed clay. This method is different from the direct use of glaze painting. While it is easy to get started, it is also fun to focus on shape-carving.

The workshop is free and open to people aged 18 or above (including materials, tools and firings) and has 10 spaces available.

To register, please email [email protected] or DM with your name and contact details.

A huge thanks to everyone who has visited and spent time with ‘Beyond the Forbidden Gate’ our project with Joey Simons for — we’ve been so touched by the response. As the libraries are closed on Sundays, today (open til 5pm!) and Saturday (10am - 5pm) will be your last opportunities to see the show and to celebrate the communities who have made this work possible ⏳

🎉Join us on Saturday 8th June for the opening of ‘Beyond the Forbidden Gate’!
——————
‘Beyond the Forbidden Gate’ is a new body of work made in response to the latest phase of urban regeneration in North Glasgow. This work is produced by communities in North Glasgow in collaboration with writer and artist Joey Simons through Glasgow Sculpture Studios’ Learning + Engagement Programme.

Rather than a blank slate for the interests of industrialists, planners and developers, ‘Beyond the Forbidden Gate’ imagines North Glasgow as a stage on which competing narratives for the area—political, ideological, historical and personal—are played out, re-played, and rehearsed.

The Mitchell Library’s Old Glasgow Room—once a vital resource for anyone investigating the history of the city—is a central gathering point for the project. Favouring dialogue over monologue, ‘Beyond the Forbidden Gate’ assembles a chorus of voices, perspectives, and artworks that assert visions of North Glasgow and the communities who live there that are absent from development frameworks.

Alongside archival materials and new works by Joey, the show also includes a filmed rehearsal of ‘Fever’, a new play by Gemma Muir of SISCO (Sustainable Interventions Supporting Change Outside); a collection of poems and prose from the SISCO Creative Writing Group in Springburn; and sculptural works and texts by artist Martin McCreadie, all exploring systems of enclosure, incarceration, and the liberatory potential of art and solidarity.
