Nicholas Taron and Sam Synstelien were heading back toward Morro Bay, California, aboard their eel boat when they noticed something unusual offshore.

The rescue was successful—but wildlife experts strongly warned against copying it.

NOAA Pacific Fisheries spokesman Justin Veizbicke said professional rescuers **never enter the water with an entangled whale**, because the animals are powerful and unpredictable. People have died attempting similar rescues, and the Coast Guard called the footage a dangerous example that could encourage untrained people to take the same risk.

Taron and Synstelien were fortunate to return to their boat unharmed.

And somewhere beyond Morro Bay, the humpback they risked everything to help was finally swimming without the rope that had nearly dragged her beneath the surface.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Michael Hingson, blind since birth, was working on the 78th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. Beneath his desk, his guide dog, Roselle, was asleep.

At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 struck the tower roughly 15 floors above them.

The building shook violently. The floor seemed to move beneath Hingson, while his colleague David Frank saw smoke and flames outside the windows and immediately warned everyone that they had to get out.

Hingson couldn't see the danger around him.

So he trusted the dog who could.

Roselle calmly emerged from beneath the desk and went straight into work mode. Hingson called his wife, made sure the people around him were moving, and followed Roselle toward Stairwell B.

The smell of jet fuel filled the stairwell as they began the descent.

There were **1,463 steps** between them and the ground.

Roselle guided Hingson through the crowded staircase while debris fell around them and firefighters rushed upward toward the people still trapped above. Panic surrounded them, but Roselle remained focused.

“While everyone ran in panic, Roselle remained totally focused on her job,” Hingson later recalled.

On February 13, 2020, a cardboard box appeared outside Refugio Xollin, a small dog rescue in Michoacán, Mexico.

Inside was a frightened puppy, a stuffed toy, and a handwritten letter.

The note had been written by a 12-year-old boy named Andrés. He explained that he and his mother had secretly brought the puppy to the shelter because his father planned to sell him and had been abusing him.

“My dad was planning to sell him, but he also mistreated him,” Andrés wrote, explaining that his father had kicked the puppy and once hit him so hard that his little tail was injured.

They could no longer stand by and watch it happen.

Andrés asked the shelter to take care of the puppy and left the stuffed toy behind so he would have something familiar with him.

For the staff at Xollin, the discovery was heartbreaking. They knew the boy had given up his dog because he was trying to protect him, and now the shelter carried the responsibility of making sure that sacrifice meant something.

They named the puppy René.

A veterinarian treated his injuries and dewormed him, and once Xollin shared his story and Andrés's letter online, the response was overwhelming. More than 300 people from across Mexico reportedly expressed interest in adopting him.

But the shelter made an unexpected decision.

René would stay.

Instead of sending him to another home, Xollin gave him a permanent place there. Years later, René is fully recovered and has become part of the shelter itself, greeting visitors and welcoming other dogs as they arrive.

Andrés was only 12 when he made the heartbreaking decision to give up his puppy.

He couldn't protect René by keeping him.

So he did the next best thing: he found somewhere safe and trusted enough to protect him instead.

The little boy couldn't keep his promise to René alone.

But an entire shelter did.

Late on the evening of July 22, a California sea lion hauled itself onto the seawall at La Jolla Cove near Ellen Browning Scripps Park and simply rested there.

Then 18-year-old Tyler Muehl approached.

According to investigators, Muehl raised his hands as though preparing for a fight and identified himself as UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway. He then kicked the sea lion four times, including two forceful kicks to its face.

The animal recoiled and flinched from the blows.

When it turned and tried to escape, Muehl followed it and kicked at it again. The frightened sea lion stumbled along the seawall while desperately trying to get away before finally making it over the wall and onto the beach.

A bystander recorded the incident, and the video quickly spread online. Federal investigators with NOAA Fisheries subsequently opened an investigation.

On Thursday, Muehl pleaded guilty in federal court to a misdemeanor violation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act for harassing protected wildlife. He faces a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine when he is sentenced on October 20 by U.S. Magistrate Judge Jill L. Burkhardt.

U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon summarized the seriousness of the case in three words: **“Federal crime. Federal consequences.”

NOAA Fisheries Assistant Director Eric Morgan also warned that deliberately striking or kicking a marine mammal is not only illegal but potentially dangerous to the animal.

Muehl's attorney said the teenager accepted responsibility for the misdemeanor at his first court appearance.

California sea lions are protected under federal law, and encounters like this are exactly why those protections exist.

The sea lion had done nothing but rest on the seawall.

It eventually escaped into the surf, leaving the scene alive—but carrying the memory of an attack it never provoked.

For nearly a decade, millions of people followed a livestream just to watch Jackie the bald eagle raise her young from a nest roughly 150 feet above a pine tree overlooking Big Bear Lake in Southern California. Alongside her mate, Shadow, she became one of the most closely watched wild birds on the internet.

Her final weeks were witnessed publicly too.

More than three weeks before her death, Jackie was found grounded and unable to fly along the north shore of Big Bear Lake near Fawnskin. She had apparently lost a territorial fight with two younger eagles. Although she showed no major injuries from the confrontation, veterinarians at the Ojai Raptor Center soon discovered something far more serious: Jackie was suffering from severe, life-threatening anemia.

She received a blood transfusion, oxygen therapy, and constant medical care, but her condition continued to deteriorate. In the early hours of August 10, 2026, Jackie died.

The Ojai Raptor Center said every decision during her treatment had been based on the available medical evidence and what was best for her welfare.

Afterward, pathologists with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance performed a necropsy. Then Jackie's remains entered a process governed not by emotion, but by federal law.

Under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, eagle remains cannot simply be kept or disposed of like those of an ordinary wild animal. Jackie's body was sent to the National Eagle Repository, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facility that receives thousands of deceased bald and golden eagles each year.

The repository distributes legally permitted eagle feathers, wings, and other parts to enrolled members of federally recognized tribes for traditional ceremonies, including healing, marriage, and prayer.

For years, people watched Jackie build her nest, raise eaglets, defend her territory, and endure storms high above Big Bear Lake.
