Pawformers and Patrons of the arts,
It is with a heavy heart that I announce Mamma Mia! will not be staged this year. While we are heartbroken, we are as always an ensemble and we will find other ways to share art, as many of our Broadway colleagues have done. When I have a plan I’ll let you know.
We often speak about the process of theatre, how the performance is so little of all we do. Let’s celebrate that. We celebrate our growth and work; we love to perform for an audience. We may be without an audience for this one, but it does not diminish the experience of the process. It does not diminish the beauty of the work you have done and the joy of art-making. Think about all you have learned in the process of your work, hold on to the relationships you built as we worked to create together, the problems we solved, the obstacles overcome, the laughter in the wings. And more importantly the art you made in moments on stage. I saw these moments of beauty and hold on to them.
For me, the beauty of educational theatre is always in the process. While the theatre may be empty I am as always standing behind you, applauding the loudest, and expressing my joy at being a part of your progress as emerging artists. My work is always done when the curtain opens and can no longer offer you anything and you run the show. I am proudest of you just before the curtain opens. This time I get to be prouder still because we will navigate changes in our expectations together.
Patrons and Parents, please share in celebrating the work these artists have done. Your kids will always have my standing ovation.
