Volunteering can help build confidence –
The NCVO tells us almost three-quarters (74%) of volunteers agreed that volunteering had given them more confidence
Brenda, one of our Pantry volunteers shared this –
“Volunteering has given me a sense of purpose, somewhere to go that’s light and free from responsibility. A place to use the skills I have gained and use them for good. I like to meet people and help people and to give back to the local community in a small way.
The people here at SWAMP have been very welcoming and have understood that for a some of us a few hours spent helping others is a confidence boost.
P.S the café does a mean roll and sausage!”

Will volunteering help me…?
The Royal Voluntary Service lists an improvement in a person’s mental and physical health as one of the top 5 benefits of volunteering.
We know that keeping active, mentally as well as physically, has a powerful influence over our health and wellbeing. One of our own volunteers shared their journey below-
“I started volunteering after my mum passed away. I was my mum’s carer and was very down after her passing, coming into the Café in the SWAMP has helped me so much with my anxiety and I have learned so much to do with working in a café. I have met so many new people without feeling anxious and all the staff at SWAMP made me feel so welcome”

Why volunteer….?
According to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, the main reason people volunteer is to make a difference. They give their time to help others or support a cause that means a lot to them.
They also volunteer as a way to meet new people and experience new things.
One of our volunteers, Jack who has volunteered in both the Pantry and the café said this –
“I’ve enjoyed working and meeting different people, and I’ve enjoyed serving customers within the community”

Over the next few days, we will be sharing some fun facts about volunteering as well as some thoughts from out volunteers about what volunteering means to them. If you find yourself drawn to the idea of volunteering, please contact [email protected] to find out more.
