“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)
This Beatitude given by our Saviour in the Sermon on the Mount speaks of people who mourn being comforted. It is a verse that some people associate with funerals, and whilst the sentiment may be true it is actually referring to what can be called a holy sorrow for sin. It is a reflecting upon your sin and its sad consequences in your life. Sin always separates you from God and sin is the cause of so much sorrow in the world. Mourning over your sin should lead you in repentance and faith to the Redeemer who has paid the price of sin for his people and this should give you the comfort in knowing that your sins have indeed been forgiven.

“And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them and carried up into heaven.” (Luke 24:51)
The risen Lord Jesus had shown himself to his disciples to show that death had no dominion over him, and he had opened the scriptures of the Old Testament to them to show that his death and resurrection were in fulfilment of prophecy. Our Lord and Saviour then gave them a commission to preach the gospel of saving grace among all nations beginning at Jerusalem. His earthly ministry was now complete, and our salvation had been purchased by the shedding of his own precious blood, it was now time to return to glory in heaven to sit at the right hand of God the Father. Let us thank God that we have such a Redeemer to save us from our sin!
