This is one of the early radioactive samples from the ‘Soddy Box’ built to house radium samples used by Professor Frederick Soddy at the University of Glasgow between 1904 and 1914. The image shows sodium iodide crystals glowing in the gamma rays from the sample. The photographer was shielded by a thick lead wall and captured the image via a mirror placed in front of the sample.
