TEDxUniversityOfGlasgow is an independently organised TED-like event brought to you by a group of students from University of Glasgow. Its aim is to bring together bright minds from the community and beyond in a one day conference to spread great ideas, spark conversations, and catalyse positive change. The society has successfully organised four conferences since 2014, and is working towards the
fifth which is scheduled to take place in March 2018. Over the academic year our Salon team is organising events to engage the local community at a more direct level. The Salon is a great place to get involved with TEDxUniversityofGlasgow activities and experience the much talked about TEDx-vibe through viewings, workshops, and micro-talks. For any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly through the page, or at any of the following email address:
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities. Happy PRIDE month!
Here at TedxUofG we are committed to championing, empowering and uplifting the LGBTQIA+ community, always.
In the current socio-political landscape, it is commonplace for corporations to engage in Pride posturing for PR purposes: branding their store fronts and offices with tokenistic rainbows whilst they continue to fund governments that have anti LGBTQIA+ legislation in place. But we hope that genuine compassion can still be found in amongst this sea of commercialisation.
Throughout June we are interrogating the non-monolithic existence of the LGBTQIA+ community and sharing informative resources on the nuances of intersectionality that is not usually brought into mainstream focus, from the disproportionate violence against Black transgender people to the LGBTQIA+ youth homelessness pandemic.
The LGBTQIA+ community here in Glasgow enrich the city beyond measure and at TedxUofG we are privileged to have a diverse team.
As a Q***r Ted member penning this post, I hope this celebration can extend beyond June, and into the rest of the year, in the form of conversation and action!
Check out the following powerful Ted Talk in which Sam Somwaiya looks at how far Q***r rights have come, but also how far we have to go.
Being Q***r: Rights, Violence and Pride
What is q***r Pride, exactly, and what purpose does it serve to the q***r community in the modern day? Does it serve any purpose, beyond being a show of glitz, glam, and glory? What's the point in it, if q***r people "have all their rights", according to some? Sam Somwaiya takes a brief look at the....
