Kelvinside Academy

Kelvinside Academy is an independent school in Glasgow, Scotland, founded in 1878. We educate over 600 pupils aged 3 - 18 years.

Kelvinside Academy may have first opened its doors in 1878 and be housed in a Grade A listed building in Glasgow’s West End, but there’s much more going on inside the walls of the school than meets the eye.

Operating as usual

To mark the start of Ramadan this weekend, Yousef A (S1) handed out dates to his year group. Dates have an important significance throughout Ramadan. They are used to break the fast every day at sunset before Muslims come together for the Iftar meal.

Ramadan Mubarak' to our Muslim pupils and members of the KA community.

We had an amazing day at the Innovation School on Monday as we welcomed, Anna Campbell Jones, presenter of Scottish Homes of the Year! It was an absolute honour to have Anna share her personal journey with us and offer invaluable feedback and advice on our latest project – the redesign of a local building, Ha'penny House.

With Anna's guidance, we're taking our designs to the next level to transform Ha'penny House into a vibrant meeting space for Friends of the River Kelvin and our community!

Huge thanks to Anna for her inspiration and expertise!

Junior school celebrated Lunar New Year today 🧧🐲✨

Children enjoyed lots of activities including a video call with a school in China, crafts and dumpling making!

Kira (J4) and Lewis’ (J1) mum showed classes how to make dumplings! She also very kindly gifted a copy of her own published cookbook! The dumplings were enjoyed by all the classes… and staff too 🥟 A massive thank you also to Kira and Lewis’ grandma, visiting from Boston, who came to help along with Eddie (J2) and Mia’s (J5) mum and Ailsa’s (J4) mum!

It was also a very special 5th birthday for Lewis, our youngest pupil, receiving a celebratory cake from our oldest pupil Dana-Louise D (S6) 🎂🎉

Blair wins a Grammy 📣

20-year-old Academical Blair Ferguson has sensationally won a Grammy award for his work on SZA's smash hit Snooze in last night's Los Angeles ceremony.

He said it was "incredible" to be a winner at the Grammys representing his home country. Despite being relatively unknown in Scotland, Blair has already worked alongside stars such as Justin Bieber and Diddy. He contributed to his first top US top 10 album when he was just 16.

Blair won Grammy Awards for his contribution to SZA’s Billboard RnB chart number one Snooze – one of the biggest selling hits of 2024, which was named best R&B Song; and SOS by SZA, which was named Best Progressive R&B Album. Blair took to the stage alongside collaborator and fellow producer Carter Lang to collect the Grammy for the latter.

The former Kelvinside Academy pupil's success is made all the more impressive as he launched his career just five years ago from his Glasgow bedroom.

Interviewed backstage following the ceremony, Blair paid tribute to SZA – who he described as ‘incredible’, and also gave a nod to his roots in Scotland, where he grew up in Glasgow’s West End – where his family, former teachers, and schoolmates were celebrating at home.

Our Story

Kelvinside Academy may have first opened its doors in 1878 and be housed in a Grade A listed building in Glasgow’s West End, but there’s much more going on inside the walls of the school than meets the eye.
It’s been a year of change and innovation. Just this summer, Kelvinside Academy formed an exclusive partnership with the world’s leading innovation school, NuVu, which saw its pupils working with academics from Harvard and MIT to solve real world problems. The studios brought by the Boston-based ‘School of the Future’ focused on swarm robotics and bio-fashion. Rather than classrooms, subjects or a timetable, pupils worked on collaborative projects, immersing themselves in the creative process under the guidance of designers and experts. They spent their days like engineers, creating and testing solutions to real life problems through a critical and rigorous innovation process. In addition to this, as part of the curriculum, Kelvinside Academy pupils are taught to code and the school recently invested in an array of emergent technology from 3D printers to laser cutters and drones, reinforcing its commitment to innovation.

At the start of the last academic year, Kelvinside Academy developed a “Thinking Space”, inspired by Silicon Valley. The facility includes an experimental teaching room, known as the “Think Tank”, with tables and walls which pupils can write on. It has all the features of a traditional school library but it wouldn’t be out of place in tech organisations like Facebook or Google. It’s a peaceful, light and airy space where pupils can be comfortable, inspired and engaged.

Kelvinside Academy also formed a partnership with the University of Glasgow where Primary 6 pupils embarked on a unique project with Dr Niamh Stack, Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, to become researchers and investigate issues important to them and their school community. Each pupil was challenged to design their own independent research project, create questions and conduct analysis in a project aimed to develop creativity, critical thinking, numeracy, literacy, communication skills and analytical capability.

Outdoor education plays a primary role in learning at Kelvinside Academy, the school is finalising its new Wilderness Campus in the Cairngorms National Park. Here, pupils will challenge themselves in the outdoors whilst benefitting from the rejuvenating power of nature. Together with the newly refurbished School Yacht ‘Level Best’, a new roof garden, the Forest Kindergarten and a number of other initiatives, Kelvinside Academy has made a real commitment to outdoor education.

Pastoral care is of huge importance at Kelvinside Academy, Dan Wyatt, Deputy Rector at Kelvinside Academy has been appointed to the SCIS Pastoral Care Advisory Group. The new roof garden has been specifically designed to offer a flexible outdoor learning resource, and space for mindfulness and personal development in a unique setting.
Commenting on the school, Rector Ian Munro said: “Kelvinside Academy is committed to developing young people capable of independent thought who are passionate about learning. We continue to look outside the traditional education system for ideas and inspiration to help prepare pupils for the real world.”
