Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Welcome to the Official page of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) Department. It is by far the largest of its type in Scotland.

There are around 500 undergraduate and 130 postgraduate students in the department and around 100 academic, research, administrative and technical staff. It has the highest independently assessed standing in its discipline in Scotland for both teaching and research. The staff complement covers a wide range of expertise and this is reflected in the research profile and in the portfolio of specialist MEng courses.

Last month, members of the Advanced Composites Group attended and presented at the 22nd European Conference on Composite Materials (ECCM22) in Oslo.

We are proud to see our researchers contributing to discussions on the future of composites research and sharing their latest work with the international research community.

Among those presenting their research were postgraduate researchers Beth Malone, Paul Nixon, Lewis Kelly, Greg May-Wilson, Alexander Payne, and Kathryn Kennedy.

Congratulations to Alexander Payne and Kathryn Kennedy, who delivered presentations at their first conference just eight months into their PhD journeys. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the high-quality research being undertaken within the department.

Well done to everyone involved for representing Strathclyde so successfully on the international stage.

Recently our Head of Department Cameron Johnstone and our Undergraduate Programmes Lead Gemma Houston-Scott were invited to attend Arup Glasgow’s Spring Showcase.

This was a great evening event with Arup, bringing together academics and industry professionals for insightful discussion and networking.

It was valuable to gain perspectives on the Scottish market outlook, skills demand, and areas of growth, as well as learn more about Arup’s work and upcoming opportunities. Hearing from some of our recent graduates about their early career journeys was a real highlight.

A fantastic opportunity to connect, share ideas, and strengthen links between higher education and industry.
