Professor Mona Simion (Philosophy): 'Disinformation, Politically Motivated Reasoning, and Distrust in Expertise.'
Abstract: We have increasingly sophisticated ways of acquiring and communicating knowledge, yet, paradoxically, we are currently facing an unprecedented global ignorance crisis that affects our personal and societal well-being, as well as the stability of our democracies. There are two key triggers to this crisis: first, the widespread sharing of disinformation, which, in conjunction with an overly trusting audience, contributes to widely spread false beliefs, and correspondingly reckless political and social behaviour. At the same time, though, and at least as critical, is the prevalence of knowledge resistance and distrust in expertise. What we need to solve this high-stakes puzzle is a social epistemological framework that is able to explain the complex mechanisms underlying these surprising and unprecedented epistemic phenomena. This talk sketches the contours of such a framework.

Did you graduate from the School of Humanities prior to (and including) 2019? If so we would love to hear about your career journey and experiences since leaving The University of Glasgow.
Weâre inviting alumni of the School of Humanities, such as yourself, to take part in a short survey exploring the impact of a Humanities Degreeâon careers, life paths, and the skills, values, and perspectives it has helped to shape. Your insights will contribute to a report on the long-term benefits of studying Humanities, helping to inspire current and future students.
The survey takes around 10 minutes to complete and is entirely voluntary. Your responses will be managed by the University of Glasgowâs Development & Alumni office and shared anonymously with Dr Robert Cowan (Senior Lecturer Philosophy), who is leading this research.
