Email sent from school on behalf of PC Ferguson

Hello parents and carers,

I just wanted to pass on some information in relation to electric scooters. Since the summer holidays there have been a number of students bringing electric scooters to school.

All electric scooters in Scotland are illegal, regardless of speed limiters, weight and size. No electric scooter is allowed on the pavement/road/parks at any time in Scotland. They can only be used on private land with the permission of the landowner. E-bikes have different regulations.

I understand this may feel like a shock as there are a large amount of scooters in Glasgow which is an issue police Scotland are working on.

Please do not allow your child to bring a scooter to school. If your child has one please encourage them to use them in the garden/private land and always wear a helmet.

If you have any questions on this please don’t hesitate to contact the school and ask to speak with me.

There is some further guidance on the government website

Riding an electric scooter: the rules - GOV.UK

Many thanks,

PC Ferguson.

Springburn Academy School Engagement Officer.

Subject: Working together: Supporting positive choices in our local community

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to ask for your support with an issue that has recently been brought to my attention by the manager of our local shopping centre.

As you will know, many of our young people access the shopping centre during interval and lunchtime, with the exception of our S1 pupils who are not permitted to leave the school grounds. Unfortunately, the centre has recently seen an increase in complaints from shopkeepers and members of the public regarding the conduct of a small minority of our pupils.

I want to emphasise that the vast majority of our young people are fantastic ambassadors for Springburn Academy, and it is disappointing that the actions of a small number risk affecting the reputation of our whole school community.

The concerns raised include shouting, inappropriate language, insults and abusive comments directed towards shopkeepers, staff and members of the public, as well as va**ng within and around the shopping centre. This behaviour is simply not acceptable. We regularly remind our young people that when they are wearing our uniform and out in the local community, their choices and behaviour reflect not only themselves but also our school.

I would therefore really appreciate your support in reinforcing this message at home and reminding your child of the importance of treating everyone in our community with courtesy and respect, behaving appropriately in public spaces and not va**ng.

The shopping centre is keen to work positively with us to resolve this. However, if there is no improvement, it may need to consider measures such as limiting the number of pupils permitted to access the centre or barring individual young people whose behaviour causes concern. Security staff also use body-worn cameras and will liaise directly with the school and, where appropriate, Police Scotland so that incidents can be identified and addressed quickly.

We very much want to avoid restrictions being introduced which would impact the many young people who use the centre responsibly every day. With the support of our families, I am confident that we can reinforce the high standards of behaviour we expect and ensure that our pupils continue to be welcomed within their local community.

Thank you, as always, for your support and partnership.

πŸ’œ Could you be part of our Parent Council? πŸ’œ

Being a Parent Council member is about making a difference for our children, our school and our community. 🏫✨

You don’t need to have lots of experience or know everything about how a Parent Council works β€” just bring your ideas, enthusiasm and willingness to get involved! πŸ’¬πŸ™Œ

🏫 Support our school β€” help shape decisions and plans
πŸ’¬ Encourage involvement β€” help strengthen the connection between home and school
πŸŽ‰ Get involved β€” with events, fundraising and activities
❀️ Make a difference β€” help create a positive and inclusive environment for every child

And remember β€” you don’t have to attend every meeting to have your voice heard. If you have something you’d like us to raise, you can always get in touch with us. πŸ’Œ
