Just a wee heads-up that spaces in our new Beginners Spanish class are filling up — so if you’ve been meaning to join us, now’s a good time to grab your place!

Beginners Spanish – Level 1
📅 Wednesday evenings
⏰ 6.00–7.30pm
📍 The Luna Centre, Hairmyres, East Kilbride
🗓 Starts Wednesday 2nd September
💷 £14.50 per class / £217.50 for the 15-week block (payment plans available!)

What if your biggest academic barrier isn’t ability—but bandwidth?

How do you know when you’ve reached your limit academically? Is it intellectual ability, ambition, competing commitments... or is it a combination of all three?

Having the summer school holidays to focus on my research has been an absolute dream. It’s given me the time and headspace to read more widely, think more deeply, write more carefully and, perhaps most importantly, gain a much clearer sense of direction and purpose. I’ve loved every minute of it.

I love being a teacher too. It’s who I am. It’s what makes me tick. But over the past few weeks I’ve realised how different it feels when your mind only has to operate on one wavelength. There have been fewer competing demands, fewer context switches, and more space to immerse myself in the work.

It makes me wonder whether many of us don’t reach our academic limits because of a lack of ability or ambition, but because we’re constantly balancing multiple roles and responsibilities... oh and being a parent too by the way... don’t forget that one!

Maybe the real challenge isn’t our potential—it’s our capacity.

Have you ever wondered how much more you could achieve with just a little more uninterrupted thinking time? Maybe you could learn a new language? 🇪🇸 🇫🇷

Interesting start to this Parliament: a record number of MSPs choosing to be sworn in using languages other than English.

Gaelic. Scots. Urdu. Punjabi. Doric. British Sign Language. And more.

Some will roll their eyes and call it performative. I see something else entirely.

Language is identity. It’s heritage. It’s community. And in politics, it’s also a signal about who feels seen in our institutions — and who doesn’t. The way I view it, this is a powerful symbol of people not feeling they have to leave parts of themselves at the door to belong in professional or public spaces.

The real question isn’t whether MSPs should swear in using different languages. It’s this: Genuine progress in representation? Symbolism? Or both?
