Bearsden nursery embracing learning through play, friendship and exploration of the outdoors

In May we had 5 tiny caterpillars arrive at our nursery. The children named them Hungry, Lucy, Colin, Sparkles and Rainbow. Over the past 4-5 weeks the children have watched them grow as caterpillars inside their pot eating and moving about. We have observed them change into Chrysalis ready to transform into a butterfly. They have read books about the life cycle of a caterpillar and made their own life cycle posters. Everyone was delighted when 5 butterflies emerged from their Chrysalis, the children watched 2 of them emerge whilst they were at nursery which was incredibly exciting to witness. For 48 hours we learnt what butterflies needed to survive and children helped to feed them fresh fruit and nectar made from sugar and water mixture. We created our own butterflies exploring symmetry. On Monday of this week it was time to say good bye to our 5 little friends and everyone enjoyed setting them free in the sunshine in the nursery garden. All the children received a certificate for helping to care for the caterpillars.

We had a lovely trip to Monty's farm park yesterday.
Even in the rain we managed to have fun meeting all the different animals, having a go on the go karts and exploring the play barn. All the children had fun on the tractor ride too !

Thank you all to the parents and grandparents who attended and had fun with us.

This week we had our stay and play den building with our parents and grandparents.

Children and adults together explored making Dens in our garden and created different building structures and furniture for the dens. Together they read stories in the dens and role played.

Within our Willow room the children have been practising many skills and developing new ones within Literacy and numeracy, physical skills and developing well being skills through new relationships.

The children have been looking at a variety of stories such as the Tiger who came to Tea, the Very Hungry Caterpillar and more recently The Gruffalo- opposites.

During Hungry Caterpillar interest, we were included in a small walk to the local shops to buy fruit that the hungry caterpillar ate. We discussed the different types of fruits and looked at some basic numeracy involving money. We also developed some life skills such as chopping fruit.

Through our Tiger who came to tea we had a tea party using pots, cups, spoons and flavoured tea bags, developing friendships and social skills.

The children have been learning opposites through the Gruffalo story such as big and small, long and short. We have compared sizes through measuring who is bigger and smaller height wise between friends and learning which is long and short during a water play experience, where we added long and short ribbons and the children had to compare sizes.

This week Ms Shivani completed her first year of Nurture training.

As our Nurture champion she has been developing emotional regulation for all children, creating a nurture space for children, working with the team and children to help explore our feelings and developing nurture bags to take home and work with their families.

Well done Ms Shivani

Weekly our chestnut room have begun to visit Bearsden Library to pick some stories for our story corner.

The children loved exploring the newly open Library and developing their early reading skills in a new environment. It is nice to have the Library open again.

Last week we had our Easter egg stay and play with our parents.

Children and parents went on an Easter egg hunt in our garden, listened to a story about the Easter bunny and did some printing with potatoes and paint. The children also took part in an egg and spoon race against each other.

Thankfully the weather stayed nice during both our sessions.
