2024 RSE Medals honour exceptional achievement 03/04/2024

It is a great honour to have been awarded the RSE medal, which recognises outstanding contributions to research and practice. This recognition is not only a reflection of my own efforts, but also of the countless people I have had the privilege of collaborating with, the lives that have been impacted, and the enduring wounds and scars that persist. I am truly grateful to Alison Phipps and Fergus McNeill for their unwavering support, as well as to Tesfalem Habte, Zeraslasie Shiker, Samson Maekele, and many others for friendship and stimulating intellectual conversations.

“If we are incapable of recognising a human face in the faces of the refugees or a human place in the places of the refugees, then how can we claim to have humanity in our own faces and hospitality in our own places? There is a radical denial of humanity and hospitality in the UK asylum system, and this denial amounts to a refusal of the subjectivity of the refugee”. ~ see my blog👇🏾

Reclaiming our Humanity from the Necropolitics of Coloniality 20/06/2022

“We must shift our efforts and imagination away from the omnipresent violence and reclaim our humanity and subjectivity from the necropolitics of coloniality. Reclaiming our humanity and subjectivity requires of us understanding that receiving the Other is an inescapable ethical relationality.” ~ my reflection on World Refugee Day

Reclaiming our Humanity from the Necropolitics of Coloniality In this short blog for World Refugee Day (20 June), Dr Hyab Yohannes writes that we must be prepared for unconditional hospitality and non-exclusive humanity.

As of today, I am a doctor, but what about the real bearers of knowledge – the research participants? 19/01/2022

"What carries the truth that liberates our inquisitive minds and forms the PhDs, such as mine, is the primaeval pain and the pale sadness of these wounded bodies, the disremembered stories and the unmarked graves. If a PhD is a formal recognition of one’s contribution to knowledge, no one is more knowledgeable of the realities of becoming and the conditions of being refugees than the refugees themselves."👇
