It is a great honour to have been awarded the RSE medal, which recognises outstanding contributions to research and practice. This recognition is not only a reflection of my own efforts, but also of the countless people I have had the privilege of collaborating with, the lives that have been impacted, and the enduring wounds and scars that persist. I am truly grateful to Alison Phipps and Fergus McNeill for their unwavering support, as well as to Tesfalem Habte, Zeraslasie Shiker, Samson Maekele, and many others for friendship and stimulating intellectual conversations.

2024 RSE Medals honour exceptional achievement The RSE announces eight recipients of its esteemed medals, which recognise outstanding contribution and achievement across all academic disciplines.

“If we are incapable of recognising a human face in the faces of the refugees or a human place in the places of the refugees, then how can we claim to have humanity in our own faces and hospitality in our own places?
