Firstly, I want to say that our thoughts are with the family and friends of those caught up in the dreadful incident at the Park Inn Hotel, West George Street, Glasgow.

Police responded to a report of an incident at the Park Inn Hotel, Glasgow at 12:50am on 26th June 2020. Six people are in hospital for treatment of their injuries including a police officer. A male suspect was shot by armed police and died. I must stress that the incident is not being treated as terrorist related and our investigation is continuing into the circumstances.

I want to take this opportunity to reassure Scottish communities that Incidents of this nature are very rare, though I know that this will be of little comfort to those involved and I understand the concern that this incident will have caused.

Police Scotland is committed to keeping people safe, and whilst we understand that people will clearly be appalled and feel vulnerable as a result of this incident, I would urge everyone to continue to work together and ensure no person or group in Scotland feels marginalised or isolated. Police Scotland will not tolerate any form of hate crime, and should anyone experience or witness such an incident, please report it.

It should be stressed that there is no specific information to suggest an increased risk to communities in Scotland, however you may notice increased patrols by officers, intended to increase reassurance and community engagement. We also ask that all relevant groups and organisations provide appropriate reassurance to individuals and communities.

Victim Support Scotland have extended their helpline this weekend to provide support and information to people affected by crime and the incident. The helpline number is 0800 160 1985.

If you have any relevant information or concerns, I would urge you to contact the Police by calling 101, through Contact Scotland BSL, in an emergency dial 999 or SMS 999 or contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Hate crime can also be reported using our online hate crime reporting form on the Police Scotland website or via one of our Third Party Reporting Centres.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by the incident in today.

Officers often put themselves in the face of danger and their bravery is commendable.

UPDATE 17:50

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said: "Police responded to a report of an incident at the Park Inn Hotel in West George Street, Glasgow, at 12.50pm today.

"Officers were on the scene within two minutes, and armed officers shortly afterwards, and the incident was quickly contained.

"A man was shot by armed police and has died. Six other men are in hospital for treatment, including a 42-year-old police officer, who is in a critical but stable condition. The officer's family is aware.

โ€œThe other men in hospital are aged 17, 18, 20, 38 and 53. Liaison officers have been appointed.

"Our thoughts are with the families of those who were injured, including our officer.

"The incident is not being treated as a terrorism and our investigation is continuing into the circumstances. There is no wider risk to the public, however the street remains closed and people should avoid the area.

"As would be the case in any police discharge of fi****ms involving a fatality, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has instructed the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner to investigate."
