FORMER STUDENT MAIA WINTON!

Glasgow Kelvin College is where my costumer journey began. Leaving high school I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do but I knew I had an interest in fashion and after my interview at Kelvin I knew it was the right fit for me !

While studying I gained so much knowledge of not only how to sew, pattern drafting and design garments but also about good work ethic and had great fun at the same time ! The tutors always had our best interests at heart and encouraged us all to work to our highest potential. Although there was no costume specific course at the time of my study, the tutors could see my interest in that area and helped me to tailor my work towards a costume based portfolio. While the course was hard work it prepared me massively for my future at university and further on.

Since then I went on to further study at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where I specialised in Costume Construction. I wouldn’t have been able to get into such a competitive course without all the skills I learned as a student at Kelvin. I found the transition between college and university so simple because of my time at college. I had learned so many technical skills that my first year classes didn’t seem like such a big jump and I was able to enjoy my learning experience more and focus on the specific costume skills I was learning at university.

Since graduating from RCS I have gone on to work on a number of different productions within Film & TV, including well known TV shows such as Outlander, The Crown and most recently Shetland. I have been lucky enough to work alongside a few other former students of Glasgow Kelvin while out in the industry.

After working as a costume trainee for the last 2 years I have most recently started a role as Costume Standby on an upcoming TV show that a signed NDA won’t allow me to share more information about.

I owe a lot to my time at Glasgow Kelvin College and would highly recommend all of the courses within the Fashion department to anyone who has a slight interest in Fashion or Costume.

Its 5 days till applications open for our August start courses!

Here you can see costume design work by last years NQ Fashion Design with Costume student Rosie Burslem.

Students were tasked with researching characters from a screen adaptation of a book and design costumes for them. Students then use their pattern cutting and industrial sewing skills to make the final garment!

Rosie’s chosen book/film was Blade Runner and the character Rachael.

We just love this sketchbook Rosie’s design work is gorgeous.

We also have an HNC costume course starting in August!

Learn costume industry skills such as historical fashion and costume design, corsetry, pattern cutting and traditional tailoring and embellishment techniques whilst building up your costume portfolio!
