Real horsemen and horsewomen are becoming harder to find with time. Horsemanship has changed so much, and not always for the better. Horses are treated more like babies than animals that need guidance, discipline and understanding, and because of that, so many genuinely good horses are being lost. The old-school horse people understood that horses thrive with consistency, boundaries, hard work and trust built over time. They didn’t give up the minute things got difficult ,they worked through it and created solid, honest horses.
We live in such an instant society now ,everything comes to our hands at the click of a button, and people expect horses to be the same. Quick fixes, instant results, ready-made ponies with no bucks, no bolts, no rears, and the minute a horse shows a bit of character or needs time and patience, it’s suddenly the horse that has to go. Yet those are the exact ponies we begged to ride as kids , the quirky ones, the sharp ones, the ones that taught us resilience, balance, patience and feel. By God, you daren’t ask to get off that quirky pony in our day. You sat it, figured it out and came back a better rider because of it. Those ponies made us proper horsemen and horsewomen.
Real stable management used to be a thing too. You thrived on learning. Your head was buried in books, then you’d spend hours on the yard putting it into practice, learning how to bandage properly, muck out to a high standard, tack up correctly, clip, plait, care for injuries, notice when a horse wasn’t quite right and understand why. You learned by watching experienced horse people and listening, not by looking for shortcuts. We learned by falling off, getting back on, and figuring horses out instead of giving up on them.
Horses don’t care about trends, followers or appearances; they care about consistency, fairness and someone willing to put the work in when nobody’s watching. The real horsemen and horsewomen are rare now, but they’re the reason true horsemanship still exists.
