The theme of this month's Mooncat Yoga Classes is Grounded.

During Autumn and the change of season from summer (even if it didn't feel like one!), it is natural that we can feel a little 'unsettled' in many aspects of our lives. Some days are cold, some warm; sometimes it is sunny and bright, then other days the winds howl and the rain falls.

This changeability can manifest in all sorts of ways in our lives, such as scattered thoughts likes leaves on the wind, insomnia, poor memory, feelings of being overwhelmed and stressed, and aching or painful joints.

Bringing balance back to our bodies and minds can be achieved with a lovely Grounding yoga practice, with postures such as Tree, Chair, Warrior A, Trikonasana and Goddess. Also keeping nice and cosy, using warming spices in food or teas, and massaging your body and especially your feet with sesame oil. Try to find daily moments of stillness and peace, 10-15 minutes where you can mediate, reflect on your day or simply read a good book with a mug of tea wrapped in a blanket.

One of the Mooncat Yoga YouTube videos currently available, focusing on Creating Balance within the Body.

Balancing the warming, energising energy of Pinagala Nadi with the cooling, soothing energy of Ida Nadi. We will be practicing Flying Tiger with Obliques & Curls, Warrior A & C and of course Dolphin Dips, but tempering this with Child's Pose, Thread the Needle and Reclining/Supported Baddha Konasana.

Finding that equilibrium within ourselves by balancing strength (Pingala) with ease (Ida), meeting your edge and then perhaps moving past this, or taking a breath and pausing, finding peace where you are today.

I spoke about Mudra's in the Mooncat Yoga class a couple of weeks ago, in that they not only help us to have focus during a pranayama or meditation, but also have a specific purpose whether it be physical, emotional or mental.

When used along with a Pranayama/Breathing practice, the effects of the mudra can be intensified, so pairing the correct Mudra/Pranayama is really important. For example, Ksepana Mudra when practiced alongside Dirga Pranayama (inhaling nostrils, exhaling sighing breath out though open mouth), is focusing on Letting Go, pouring out and releasing negativity to make room for good positive energy.

"We can effectively engage and influence our body and our mind by bending, crossing, extending or touching fingers with other fingers". (Gertrud Hirschi).

Isn't that just miraculous!

One of the Asana/Poses we are practicing this month is Goddess or Horse Stance/Vatayanasana.

This is a wonderful posture for building strength within the legs, but also combining different breaths or arm movements, such as Six-Way Breath, or Wrist Release, Archer Arms, Eagle Arms and many more.

The benefits of Goddess are:

🌙 Bone Density so great for Osteoporosis
🌙 Strengthening and empowering
🌙 Thighs, Glutes, Arms, Core
🌙 Hip Opening
🌙 Chest Opening
🌙 Grounded and focused
🌙Strengthening pelvic floor
🌙Alignment and balance

If you have any sacroiliac or lower back issues, take a shorter stance, and another nice option is to practice with your back to the wall.

The theme of the Mooncat Yoga classes this July is 'Inner Strength'.

Harnessing our inner Pitta/Fire energy and Tapas to sustain and fuel our practice, as we move through Summer.

Thinking about words such as Determination, Will-Power, Discovery, Curiosity, but tempering this with knowing when to push, and when to accept where you are right now (Santosha), and that recognising this place of contentment, is also a place of Strength.

It is though the practice of yoga postures, breathing (pranayama) and meditation that there is space for self-discovery and self-awareness, which leads to a deeper yoga practice and knowledge of oneself.

We will be practicing this month Ujjayi Breath, Plank Flow, Drinking Bird, WA, WB & WC plus other lovely strengthening, warming and energising postures. As always, there will be plenty of options, modifications and the use of props.

By offering plenty of options, this allows for feelings of progression, confidence, and promotes greater self-belief. We like everyone to leave the classes feeling Nurtured, Nourished and Blossoming.

"Marking the midway point, the mighty oak stands as a doorway into the year's second half. Presiding over the summer solstice on 21st June, this quintessentially British tree symbolises the great pause we experience at this time...the apparent standing still of the sun.

This sovereign tree offers food and shelter to his community. He is a resilient host, loyal to his dependents and witness to many life transitions. The oak's deeply penetrating roots enable a cathedral-like canopy of branches and leaves to flourish overhead.

Seek out the oak whenever you are in need of wise counsel. He will slow down time, cradle you in his roots and remind you of your innate resilience and enduring courage to face life's transitions with strength & grace."

Happy Summer Solstice or Litha.☀️

Today is not only about welcoming the season of light and warmth, but also welcoming these elements within ourselves. Finding our inner light and using that in a way which serves us energetically, emotionally and mentally.

Try to find time today to turn your face to the sunlight...close your eyes and breathe in all that light and warmth, and feel it filling you up, and let a smile brighten your face. Maybe practice a few rounds of sun salutation (Surya Namaskar) at the start or end of the day.
