The year 2021 hosts the 26th UN Conference Of the Parties, commonly known as COP26. This event is believed to be the world’s best chance to get runaway climate change under control.

More than 190 world leaders are expected to arrive at Glasgow, Scotland from 31st October 2021 to 12th November 2021 for 12 days of talks involving more than tens of thousands of negotiators, government representatives, businesses and citizens.

This year also brings into focus the five year review following the COP21 commitment in Paris also known as ‘The Paris Agreement’.
The UNFCCC will produce a synthesis report which will assess whether enough progress is being made on increasing ambition in the NDC’s.

The impacts of climate change that people will suffer this century and next, depend on the greenhouse gas emissions, how much global warming this will cause and the response of climate system to this warming, warns the IPCC sixth assessment report.

Different social and economic development can lead to substantially different future emissions and at progressively higher levels of global warming there are expected to be greater consequences.

The current climate in all regions is already distinct from the climate of the early or mid-20th century with respect to several climatic impact drivers, resulting in shifting magnitude, frequency, duration, seasonality and spatial extent of associated climate indices. The report predicts it is very likely that mean temperatures have increased in all land regions and will continue to increase at rates greater than the global average.

These changes are attributed to human influence in almost all regions and will continue through the 21st century.

The IPCC, currently in its sixth assessment cycle, decided on the Synthesis Report outline at the 52nd panel session of IPCC. 📗

The report outline mainly consists of three main sections arranged by time frames.

The first section, ‘Current Status and Trends’ covers historical and present period. The second section ‘Long-Term Climate and Development Futures’ addresses projected futures up to 2100 and beyond. The final section ‘Near-Term Responses in a Changing Climate’ considers current international policy timeframes and the time interval between now and 2030-40.

The report strives to cover different aspects of climate change and provide a holistic view of the developments related to climate change.

Earth Overshoot Day marks the day for that particular year when the world has used up all its resources the Earth has to offer for the year. It marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.

This has adverse impacts on the environment as well as its people. As the resources are used up faster, this means that there aren’t enough resources to meet the demands of all individuals.

This year Earth Overshoot Day landed in July 29 which is nearly a month earlier. This is mainly attributed to the coronavirus pandemic and its after effects. From that date onwards, we have entered the last 4 months of 2021 in a resource deficit.

Heavy rains in Mumbai, especially short bursts of intense rain, bear a climate change signature and as these effects become more pronounced, India’s financial capital will have to be better prepared, warn experts.

“Generally, monsoon patterns over India have altered, and now we’re having long dry periods intermittent monsoon with short spells of heavy rains within the monsoon season. Number of extreme rains has increased by threefold across several parts or India, including the national west coast.

Climate experts also warn that the topography of the west coast in combination with sea level rise and rise in earth extreme rainfall events puts cities such as Mumbai at great risk.

Floods have battered the Sri Lankan capital as the death toll rises from monsoon floods across the country.

Heavy downpours have inundated 10 of country’s 25 districts. The floodwaters are now receding but about 161,000 people were still unable to return to their homes.

The flooding in the area was exarcerbated by the illegal filling of low-lying lands reserved for storm water retention.

US Climate Envoy John Kerry told the world that it could not wait for the COVID-19 pandemic to end before dealing with climate change.

He remarked “I am very sorry to say, the suffering of COVID will be magnified many times over in a world that does not grapple with and ultimately halt the climate crisis.”

“We don’t have the luxury of waiting until COVID is vanquished to take up the clime challenge”

Plastic pollution is a global problem and is now reaching proportions that we may not be able to reverse, unless we drastically reduce the amount of plastic waste thrown into the environment,

“Potential impacts from poorly reversible plastic pollution include changes to carbon and nutrient cycles; habitat changes within soils, sediments, and aquatic ecosystems; co-occurring biological impacts on endangered or keystone species; ecotoxicity; and related societal imparts,” the scientists say.
