What's been happening at Merrylee Primary? .... After a successful application for 'Let's Grow Glasgow' funding from Glasgow City Council, we achieved new upgrades to the school's green space during the spring term :
- New planters with herb plants, accessible to all school pupils and the local community πͺ΄π±πͺ
- β A resting bench for parents, carers and local residents πͺπ©βπ¦±π©βπ¦°π§π¨βπ¦³
- β Compost and soil to top up our garden planters ready for pupils to grow food plants π©βπΎπ
ππ₯
- β Seeds for all classes which they grew in the poly tunnel then planted into the garden planters π±πͺ΄
- β New turf for the trim trail, making it safer to access the garden and more fun to play on πββοΈ
We are so grateful to parents & carers, local residents, OLA football club parents, Virgin Money corporate volunteers, pupils, school staff and PS Stewart Gardens for volunteering their time and labour.
Merrylee Green Fingers love our school's urban green spaces. The delight of the pupils working in the garden at all stages of the growing cycle aligns with school outdoor learning priorities, and local and national council food growing initiatives.

GARDEN HELPERS NEEDED!
We are always looking for garden helpers within our school community.
There are plenty of jobs year-round that we support the school by doing. No experience necessary, tools and equipment provided. Children also welcome to accompany and pitch in! Or just to play π We are usually at school on Saturday mornings, and sometimes during school time by prior arrangement with the school.
Gardening is a great way to keep fit, get outdoors and get involved in the school community.
If you can spare some time to help out in the school garden, please email [email protected]
We also have some exciting developments coming up and will share the details soon! π©βπΎ π± π¦ π»

What a fantastic turn out we had for the Merrylee Primary summer fair on Saturday!
The plants stall was bursting with donations from school families, and plants grown from seed in our polytunnel.
Lots of money was raised for the school, including from plant sales, which all goes towards additional treats and experiences for the children, to enhance their learning and enjoyment of school.
If anyone wants to bring plants/seedlings in from the SEEDLING KITS given out earlier this term, there is still plenty of space to plant them in the raised bed beside the polytunnel.
You are welcome to plant them yourself, or there are usually parent volunteers around on Saturday mornings to help.
We're looking forward to seeing everything bloom and grow over summer! βοΈπ
We also wanted to give a huge shout out to Andy at Stevenson Tree Care who has kindly given us lots of woodchip for our school garden for free.
Thank you so much Andy!

School families - if you think your seedlings are big enough to plant out now, and you'd like to bring them back for the school garden, we will be at school to help this Saturday 18th May from -
10.15am to 10.50, and 11.15 until 12pm.
We will be planting them in the raised bed beside the polytunnel, at the Community Entrance.
Alternatively, if you can't make those times, feel free to leave them beside the polytunnel and we can plant them for you, or bring them in to school and your teacher will help.
Don't worry if yours are still little! There's still plenty of growing time yet.

School families, how are your seedlings coming on? We'd love to see your progress! π±π¦βοΈπͺ΄
Almost warm enough for them to go in a sheltered outdoor space if you have one, windowsills are great if not π. Mid May is usually a pretty safe bet for no more frost!
Happy growing! π

Almost 100 seedling kits have now gone out to school families! Not too late to get yours, we have some spare, please let us know if you missed out.
Here is a video one of our pupils made to show you how to get started.
Good luck!

The Parents Association have been busy putting together our starter Seedling Kits for school families this afternoon. They will be available at parents night in school this Thursday and next Tuesday!
* What is a Seedling Kit? * π±π¦βοΈπͺ΄
To encourage families to get involved in the school garden we give out free 'grow-your-own' Kits. These include - compost, seeds (tomato, broccoli or pea), a starter container (egg carton or toilet roll) and instruction sheet.
You can then start growing your own seeds at home on a sunny windowsill, and either keep them at home or bring them in to plant up in the school garden later on in term.
We are always looking for helpers in the garden, so if you are a school parent or carer and would like to help out please email us - [email protected]
Excited to get growing again! π₯³πͺ΄
