📢 Success in UKRI Doctoral Focal Awards Nuclear Skills Call 👏

Civil and Environmental Engineering is a core partner in two doctoral training programmes which have secured funding from the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Doctoral Focal Awards Nuclear Skills call. Programmes are:

· STAND-UP (Skills and Training driving availability of National Defence Assets UP skilling) programme led by Prof Charles MacLeod through the Advanced Nuclear Research Centre (ANRC) at Strathclyde. Programme will help strengthen the UK’s capabilities in nuclear engineering, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and nuclear decommissioning. It also brings together partner universities Cumbria, Derby, Lancaster, Nottingham, Birmingham and Surrey. The government award of £9.7 million is matched by £13.1 million from industry partners, and will train 80 Engineering Doctorates. Civil and Environmental Engineering’s contribution to STAND-UP will be led by Prof Edoardo Patelli.
· SATURN-2, expands the existing SATURN (Skills And Training Underpinning a Renaissance in Nuclear) Centre for Doctoral Training, led by the The University of Manchester, and will fund an additional 88 PhD students. This £9.6 million award is supported by £4 million of additional funding from more than 20 companies in the nuclear sector. Strathclyde’s contribution to SATURN-2 will be led by Dr Mark Stillings.

🏆 Huge congratulations to University of Strathclyde alumnus, Grant Hardie, who won Silver at the Winter Olympics as part of the Team GB Curlers team 🥈 🥌

Grant, who graduated with a Masters in Civil Engineering in 2017, along with teammates Bruce Mouat, Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie, won against Switzerland in the semi-final, facing Canada in the final who took Gold.

A fantastic achievement. Well done Grant! 👏

Team GB's men's curling team receive their silver medals following a tense final where Canada took gold.

Huge congratulations to the Department's Professor Rebecca Lunn who has been awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Green Future Fellowship (a £3million 10 year fellowship) 👏 🎓

Professor Lunn's fellowship is on "Mechanochemical reactions in silicate rocks: Decarbonising the production of critical materials”. She will explore mechanochemical reactions – chemical reactions triggered by mechanical energy, such as the crushing, grinding, or fracturing of rocks. The mechanical force breaks chemical bonds in minerals, creating highly reactive surfaces that can react with greenhouse gases like CO2. When silicate rocks such as basalt and granite are crushed in CO2, these reactions trap the gas as stable silicon carbonates, while also altering the solubility of valuable metals in the rock. Applied to the 72 billion tonnes of waste rock crushed globally each year, this low-energy process could capture around 1 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, reducing emissions from mining and material production. 🌍

The Great Civils Bake Off 🍰 🧁

Yesterday the Department hosted a bake sale, organised by the Faults and Fluid Flow (FAFF) research group, to raise funds for Scottish Geology Trust's Siccar Point project.

We think these cakes were out of this world 🌍 and would of been worth of a handshake from Paul! Thanks to all the staff who baked the delicious and pre-historic treats, and to everyone who donated!
