Sometimes I wish I could bottle up the conversations that happen during paired work in my 11+ sessions.
When children work together to solve a problem, something really special happens.
They explain why they think an answer is correct, compare different methods, spot mistakes, challenge each other’s thinking and learn to justify their choices. They explore new vocabulary, practise using it in context and discover that there is often more than one way to approach a question.
Whether they’re tackling a tricky maths problem, exploring word relationships, discussing a comprehension question or working through a verbal reasoning puzzle, they’re doing so much more than simply finding the right answer.
They’re learning to:
- Apply strategies to unfamiliar questions.
- Explain and develop their reasoning.
- Use precise vocabulary and articulate their ideas.
- Learn from mistakes and consider alternative approaches.
- Build confidence by talking through their thinking.
- Collaborate, listen and learn from one another.
And they’re doing all of this while enjoying the process!
This is practical 11+ learning in action: putting knowledge into practice, making connections, testing ideas and developing the ability to think independently.
Of course, individual practice and timed papers have their place, too. But those rich conversations help children understand the why behind the answer, not just the what.
Sometimes, the most valuable learning isn't written down on the page. It's heard in the conversations happening around it.
