⚫️⚪️ Goodbye Yayoi Kusama ⚪️⚫️

Today’s news has left us feeling incredibly sad. 💔

We were completely unaware that Yayoi Kusama had sadly passed away on 14 August. In fact, only yesterday, during our ‘Pet Day’ arts & crafts workshop, we were talking to the children about how special it is to be inspired by artists who are still alive and creating.

Kusama’s wonderfully wacky, spotty cats were the stimulus for our own versions — completely unaware of her passing. 🐈‍⬛⚫️⚪️

It feels especially poignant knowing that Yayoi Kusama was the artist we were celebrating and talking about just yesterday.

Her work has been such a joyful inspiration for our children — from her iconic pumpkins 🎃 and flowers 🌸 to her unforgettable spots and dots.

We’re sure the children who created their Kusama-inspired cats yesterday would be as saddened as we are.

Thank you, Yayoi, for showing us that art can be wild, wacky, joyful and completely our own. ❤️

Your creativity will continue to inspire generations of young artists.

😎 Solar Eclipse Pinhole Projector 😎

Usually, my son is in charge of the arts and crafts in our house, but seeing as he’s out for the day with his grandparents, my daughter happily stepped in!

She had so much fun creating her very own pinhole projector eclipse box — and it’s such a simple activity to make at home.

You only need a few things:
- Cardboard box
- White paper
- Tin foil
- A pin
- Sellotape

We decided to wrap the whole cereal box to make it look pretty but this is completely optional — any cardboard or cereal box will work perfectly!

How it works:
The children should stand with their backs to the Sun — never look directly at the Sun.
The sunlight shines through the tiny pinhole you’ve made in the foil, creating an image of the Sun inside the box. They can then look through the viewing hole and see the projected image safely on the white paper at the back of the box.

If you haven’t got approved solar viewing glasses, why not have a go at making your own pinhole box today? It’s a fun little craft and a great way to get the children excited about the eclipse while keeping them safe.

🌎 Celebrating 100 years of Sir David Attenborough 🌍

Over the years, his incredible work and love for nature has inspired so many of our Fancy Pancy arts & crafts projects. From wildlife creations to nature-themed crafts, we’re so grateful for the creativity and curiosity he has encouraged in all of us.

Thank you for helping us see the beauty of our planet and inspiring generations to care for it 🌿

We look forward to dedicating a whole day to Sir David Attenborough at our May Half Term arts & crafts workshops.

💖 Handmade Fancy Pancy Card 💖

At our recent Easter arts & crafts workshops, we decided to do things a little differently…
Normally, we give out prizes at the end of each session. But this time, it just didn’t feel quite right - the number of prizes we could give didn’t reflect the incredible effort, creativity and behaviour shown by ALL of the children each day.

So instead, everyone received a little chocolate treat (which went down very well 😊).

That said…there were some children who truly stood out to us over the course of the workshops. We really wanted to recognise them in a more personal and meaningful way.

So we thought - who even gets post these days?! (Not surprising, really, with the ridiculous price of stamps 😅)

But that didn’t stop us from doing something a little special…

Our very own has lovingly handmade beautiful cards gorgeous watercolour! Each selected child has been sent their own card in the post, along with a cute colouring sheet designed by me 🎨

We really hope the children enjoy receiving a little surprise through their letterbox. If your child is one of the lucky ones, don’t forget to tag us in your stories when it arrives - we’d love to share their special moment with them! ✨

🧶 My Crocheting Champion 🧶

We’re so incredibly proud of our boy!

A little while ago I shared my son’s journey into crocheting - something completely new that none of us expected, but he embraced it with so much patience, creativity and determination. Seeing that journey come to life in this beautiful piece has been amazing in itself… but now to have it chosen as the Year 3/4 entry for his school for the iAPS Art Competition is truly amazing!

He’s put in so much time and effort, learning new skills along the way. It’s really special to see that hard work recognised.

We couldn’t be prouder of you - keep creating, keep believing in yourself and keep surprising us 💙
