"I don't understand algebra" can feel like a huge problem.

It helps to find the one step that's causing the confusion. Once you know where it is, it's much easier to help.

Take 3x + 5 = 20. Subtract 5 from both sides and you get 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3 and you get x = 5.

Now ask your child: "Why do we do the same thing to both sides?"

Their answer tells you a lot. If they can explain it, they understand the method. If they can only tell you the steps, that's the part to work on together.

Keep it relaxed and give them time to think. A wrong answer here is useful, because it shows you where the gap is.

Alongside our one-to-one tuition, National Learning Group also runs a specialist online GCSE Maths group for Year 10 and 11 students studying Edexcel exam board. Sessions are 60 minutes, with up to eight students and a tutor following a shared programme. A group can suit a child who enjoys learning alongside others, and if they need more individual attention, we can talk about one-to-one support too.

Message National Learning Group with your child's year group, and we'll tell you about group availability and how it can support them.

Reads every word, but can't tell you what's happening?

It can be worrying when your child reads fluently but struggles to explain the story afterwards. The good news is that it's something you can work on together at home.

Pick one small part of a book they already enjoy. Try a sentence like this: "Amir zipped his coat to his chin and rubbed his hands together."

Ask what they think the weather is like, then which words helped them decide. The sentence never says it's cold, but the clues are there.

Give them time to think and listen to their explanation. If they suggest something different, look back at the words together and talk it through. There are no wrong answers at this stage, just thinking out loud.

Keep it light, so reading time doesn't start to feel like a test.

If your child still finds it hard to explain what they've read, message National Learning Group and we'll show you how online tuition could help.

Eight is bigger than four, so surely one eighth is bigger than one quarter?

It’s easy to see why children get muddled with fractionsand explaining them at home can leave you scratching your head too!

Try drawing two rectangles the same size. Split one into four equal pieces and the other into eight. Then shade one piece in each.

Ask your child which shaded piece is bigger. Seeing it on paper can help them understand that more pieces means smaller pieces when you start with the same-sized whole.

Take your time and let them talk you through what they see. There’s no rush to get the answer.

If your child is struggling with maths, get in touch with our team at National Learning Group. We can chat through what they’re finding difficult and how online tuition could help.

Revised for hours, but can't remember a thing?

Few things are more disheartening for a child than putting in the effort and still blanking when it matters. And as a parent, it's hard to know what to say or do.

Here's a simple way to help at home. Ask your child to read just one small section, then close the notes. Now ask them, "What would you tell me about that topic?"

Whatever they can't recall, go back to it together. Then leave it a day or two and try again. Take your time, stay calm and praise what they do get right. Feeling safe to get things wrong is a big part of learning.

If there's one subject that keeps tripping your child up, just send us a message and tell us which topic it is. We'll take it from there.

Tomorrow is GCSE Results Day.

And if the results on the page aren't what you were hoping for, don't make a major decision in the first five minutes.

❌ A Grade 3 in Maths.
❌ A missed sixth form requirement.
❌ A result that looks wrong.
❌ A course offer that suddenly feels uncertain.

None of those automatically tells you what happens next.

There may still be options through your school or college, reviews of marking, resits, alternative courses or a different route entirely.

So before you panic, Google everything at once or assume the worst, find out what your options actually are.

We've put together a GCSE Results Day guide to help students and parents work through what comes next.

Your GCSE results tell you what happened. They don't decide what happens next.

Don't panic. Don't make a decision in 30 seconds. And definitely don't let one letter on a screen ruin your morning.

A-Level Results Day is Tomorrow.

So we've made something more useful than another "GOOD LUCK 🎓" post.

We've put together an A-Level Results Day guide covering what to actually do when you get your results.

✅ What to check on UCAS
✅ What to do if you miss your offer
✅ How Clearing works
✅ What happens if you do better than expected
✅ Grade boundaries
✅ Reviews of marking and appeals
✅ Resitting an A-Level
✅ UCAS points calculator

Whether you get exactly what you wanted, something completely unexpected, or have absolutely no idea what to do next...

Save this now. Open it this time tomorrow morning (if you need to).
