They built a bridge that would become a symbol of the North East. 🖤

The Tyne Bridge under construction, 1925–1928, brought back to life.

Thousands of tonnes of steel rising above the Tyne, men working at dizzying heights with little of the safety equipment we’d expect today, and the two halves of that unmistakable arch slowly reaching towards each other.

Then, on 10 October 1928, the finished bridge was officially opened by King George V.

Nearly a century later, it’s almost impossible to imagine Newcastle without it.

But for a few remarkable years… this is what the Tyne Bridge looked like.

Step back into Edwardian Newcastle through the pages of a remarkable souvenir book published over a century ago.
These rare photographs capture Newcastle, Gateshead and the surrounding district as people of the time saw them, from bustling streets and grand public buildings to busy quaysides and railway stations.
It's easy to forget that these weren't created for historians. They were everyday views, sold as keepsakes to visitors and locals proud of their city.

Step back in time to Edwardian Newcastle! 🚋🏛️
These incredible scenes come from a rare Edwardian souvenir book, capturing Newcastle as it appeared over 100 years ago. Using animation and restoration techniques, I've brought these historic images to life so we can experience the city as our ancestors knew it.
From bustling tram-lined streets and grand department stores to iconic landmarks such as Grey's Monument and the Central Exchange, this film offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life in Newcastle during the early 1900s.
This is just the first video in a series exploring the photographs from this remarkable souvenir book, so keep an eye out for future episodes featuring even more lost views of Edwardian Newcastle.

Pictures books like this would have been as memento for visitors to the area, or as presents for family back home. There are some pictures and views i haven't seen before.
