St Michael's Catholic Primary School in Houghton-le-Spring is celebrating a fantastic Ofsted inspection outcome after inspectors judged the school to be delivering a Strong Standard across five key areas of education, with safeguarding also confirmed as fully effective.
The inspection highlights the remarkable journey of improvement the school has undertaken, praising leaders' ambition, the high quality of teaching, pupils' excellent attitudes to learning and the impressive outcomes being achieved.
Inspectors described St Michael's as "a happy and purposeful school" where pupils flourish academically and personally. They recognised that children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities and those facing barriers to learning, achieve highly and are "extremely well prepared for their next steps in education."
The report celebrates pupils' passion for learning, noting that they confidently use ambitious subject-specific vocabulary, produce high-quality work and approach increasingly complex learning with confidence. Inspectors also highlighted the school's consistently strong outcomes, with academic performance above national averages and improving over time.
The school's curriculum received particular praise, with inspectors recognising leaders' deep understanding of how pupils learn and describing teaching as consistently effective. The report commends the trust-wide curriculum, which inspectors said, "sets the benchmark for impressive standards in the school."
Early Years provision was also recognised as a significant strength. Inspectors found that children "get off to a flying start", praising the ambitious curriculum, expert teaching of phonics and language, and the carefully planned environment that enables children to become confident, independent learners.
Beyond academic achievement, Ofsted recognised the school's strong culture and values. Inspectors highlighted pupils' exemplary behaviour, high attendance, respect for one another and enthusiasm for learning. They noted that pupils feel safe, know they belong and enjoy making a positive contribution both within school and to the wider community through charitable work and leadership opportunities.
Leadership was described as highly effective, with inspectors praising the ambition shared across both the school and Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust. Governors were recognised for providing effective support and challenge, while trust-wide systems were acknowledged for helping to secure consistently high-quality education and enabling leaders to move the school forward with purpose.
