The NEU stands firmly with Show Racism the Red Card. ✊🏽

NEU Regional Council strongly condemns Sunderland City Council’s decision to withdraw its support for Show Racism the Red Card and its Wear Red Day campaign.

At a time when racism and discrimination remain real and deeply damaging issues in our schools, workplaces and communities, we should be strengthening our commitment to anti-racist education, not stepping away from it.

Tackling racism is not a political choice. It is a moral responsibility.

As educators and trade unionists, we have a duty to challenge racism in all its forms, stand in solidarity with those who experience it, and ensure that every child and young person grows up in an environment where they feel safe, valued and included.

Show Racism the Red Card plays a vital role in educating young people, challenging prejudice and promoting equality. The NEU will continue to support its work and stand alongside all those working to build a more inclusive, anti-racist society.

Sunderland deserves leadership that brings communities together, stands up against discrimination and sends an unequivocal message that racism has no place here.

We will not be silent. We will not step back. We will continue to challenge racism wherever it exists.

✊ Standing together against racism and the far right!

Northern NEU debated a motion highlighting the rise of the far right and the urgent need for a united, whole-community response. We know that tackling racism, challenging division and defending our communities cannot be left to any one group — it takes all of us standing together.

That’s why we’ll be supporting the Unity March and Rally in Newcastle on Saturday 24th October. We stand in solidarity with everyone working to build a society rooted in equality, respect and inclusion, where hate has no place.

📍 11am – Newcastle Civic Centre
🚶 12 noon – March to Grey’s Monument

Bring your friends, family, colleagues, banners and placards. Let’s come together to show that our communities are stronger when we stand united.

NEU Members are taking joint action alongside NAHT next week in Cumbria.

School leaders in Barrow are set to take strike action in a dispute over excessive workload and compensation.

📢 Sacred Heart staff announce strike action after more than three years of disruption

NEU and NAHT members at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Barrow-in-Furness, have voted to take strike action on:

📅 13 October
📅 14 October
📅 9 November
📅 10 November

Picket lines will be in place on all strike days.

Since their school building was condemned in January 2023, staff have worked across multiple temporary sites, adapted to constantly changing arrangements, and continued to put pupils first despite significant additional workload and challenges.

While their commitment has rightly been recognised, staff say goodwill cannot continue to compensate for years of exceptional working arrangements, increased workload, and a lack of curriculum resources.

As NEU Regional Secretary Beth Farhat said:

"Nobody at Sacred Heart wants to be on strike. Our members have gone above and beyond for more than three years to support pupils and families through incredibly difficult circumstances. Strike action is an absolute last resort, but staff now feel they have exhausted all other options."

The NEU remains ready to meet with Mater Christi Multi Academy Trust and hopes a fair resolution can still be reached.
