Waste & Recycling Visitor Education Centre

Waste & Recycling Visitor Education Centre School and community recycling education workshops, activities, and site visits to the HWRC.

The Waste and Recycling Visitor Education Centre helps to teach residents, organizations and schools in Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland about how to reduce, re-use and recycle as much of their waste as possible. The Centre is managed by SUEZ recycling and recovery UK Ltd on behalf of Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland City Councils as part of the South Tyne and Waste Management Part

nership (STWWMP). The environmental regeneration charity Groundwork North East & Cumbria provide a full time Education Coordinator. The Centre acts as a hub for the delivery of a community and schools' education and engagement programme, which includes a range of waste awareness and reuse/recycling activities with local schools and community groups. These take place both within the Centre itself and through outreach work and activities held within local community settings which can be tailored to fit individual or curriculum requirements. Groundwork is a federation of charities mobilising practical community action on poverty and the environment across the UK. We believe that working with local communities to build their resilience is vital in facing up to the challenges of a globalised economy and a changing climate. We know that the negative effects of climate change and environmental breakdown impact first and worst on those who have the least power in society, and who contribute least to the cause of the crisis. A ‘just transition’ to an inclusive, netzero economy must tackle, rather than entrench, this inequality and provide a springboard for better work and healthier, happier lives in the places that need it most. This means creating green jobs that build wealth in local communities, changing behaviour to reduce wasted food, energy and water, providing biodiverse, accessible green spaces, supporting businesses to be more responsible and empowering communities to lead activities that improve their quality of life and promote health and wellbeing.

NEW PROJECT LAUNCH
Welcome to the new academic year! The W&RVEC team is looking forward to working with all the schools in Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside. Remember to like and share this post to spread the word…and remember that everything we offer is FREE OF CHARGE.
But this year, it’s not just the students getting all the fun. Over the summer holidays, we have been developing STAFF INFORMATION SESSIONS with the aim of informing school staff about recycling and sustainability, equipping them to answer questions and develop their own initiatives in school.
Do you work in a school or know someone who does? Let them know about this amazing, FREE opportunity. For more information, please contact [email protected]

For all those going tomorrow, good luck!
As we dive into the new academic year, remember that is more than just using your blue recycling bin; following and principles in particular can save you money, create plenty of opportunities for and can link to every aspect of school life. We’ve created some handy hints for how to follow the ‘3Rs’ this academic year. We’d love to hear about what you do to too, so let us know in the comments!

A huge well done to everyone who took part in our wall hangings workshop at Bowes Railway last week. You certainly ‘steamed’ ahead with your creativity, staying ‘on track’ to and create something truly spectacular from reused materials. This workshop was an excellent train-ing exercise in how unwanted materials can be used again instead of being thrown away. But don’t hit the buffers after the workshop or shunt to the side- use your newfound skills to see what else you can create!

Donate unwanted uniform and school supplies to charity shops, designated uniform swap shops and local schools. You might also have family or friends who would love to take on outgrown clothes. It’s great for your community, your pocket and for the planet!
