❌ MYTH MONDAY: If someone with diabetes becomes unwell, they need insulin.

✅ FACT: If someone is having a hypo, giving them insulin could make the situation worse.

A hypo happens when someone's blood sugar drops too low.

Signs can include:

😰 Sweating
🤲 Shaking
😵 Dizziness or confusion
😴 Tiredness or weakness
😠 Changes in mood or behaviour
💓 A fast heartbeat

If they're conscious and able to swallow safely, they may need a fast-acting source of glucose, such as a sugary drink or glucose tablets, followed by something longer-acting once they begin to recover.

If they become unconscious, do not give them anything to eat or drink. Call 999 and place them in the recovery position if they're breathing normally.

Knowing the difference matters.

Search & Rescue Medics can work in challenging and unpredictable environments, supporting casualties where terrain, weather, location and access can make providing emergency care much more complex.

Depending on the organisation and role, this could involve:

🏔️ Responding to incidents in remote or difficult locations
🩺 Assessing and treating casualties before evacuation
❤️ Providing emergency care when additional help may be some distance away
🤝 Working closely with rescue teams and other emergency services
🧠 Making calm, considered decisions in challenging environments

✅ FACT: Someone with a minor head injury doesn't necessarily need to be kept awake.

If they've been appropriately assessed and it's safe for them to recover at home, rest is important.

What matters is knowing the warning signs that could indicate a more serious head injury.

🚨 Seek urgent medical help if someone develops symptoms such as:

🧠 Increasing confusion or unusual behaviour
🤮 Repeated vomiting
😴 Difficulty staying awake or being woken
⚡ A seizure
👁️ Problems with vision
💪 Weakness or numbness
🤕 A severe or worsening headache

Following a significant head injury, always seek appropriate medical advice if you're unsure.
