Dear All,
These are two wonderful films celebrating 100 years of Steiner Waldorf education - they are powerful, moving and filled with intelligence and hope. They are full of the reasons why we have chosen the education. I do hope you have time to watch them.

£2,200 raised by Steiner Academy Frome pupils to support South African school.

The children at Steiner Academy Frome (SAF) hoped to raise £400 from their sponsored read to provide fruit for a year for a School in South Africa. They were thrilled to find out that the final total raised was just over £2,200.

To celebrate the centenary of the first Steiner Waldorf School opening, SAF wanted to help the 250 children of Zenzeleni Waldorf School, after one of their own teachers visited the Cape Town school last year.

A sponsored read seemed the perfect way for the Frome children to get involved, and they enthusiastically chose their books and set their targets.

“We’re very proud of the children's efforts,” said Abi Allanson, SAF’s Literacy Coordinator. “And it’s been wonderful for them to see how their hard work has paid off”.

As in most Scandinavian countries and in Steiner Waldorf Schools worldwide, formal learning at SAF begins when children are rising 7. Literacy is introduced initially through traditional stories and folk tales combined with mainstream phonics methods.

Abi Allanson, who is also the co-author of Writing to Reading the Steiner Waldorf Way, explains, “After several years learning through imaginative play in kindergarten, our children are raring to go in Class 1. We aim to capitalise on their enthusiasm, well-developed pre-reading skills, and maturity to enable them to master this new world of possibilities.”

The sponsored read definitely appears to have lit a spark, as the children are already keenly planning their costumes for World Book Day later this year.

As the overnight weather has matched the forecasts, Steiner Academy Frome will be closed today.
We look forward to seeing children and parents again tomorrow.

An email from the Environment Manager of Frome Town Council:

Vote on the public toilets in Victoria Park
http://www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk/voteonvictoriaparktoilets/

As previously reported, we’ve adopted Participatory Budgeting (PB) this year - giving residents opportunities to make direct decisions about how some of our budgets are spent.

Frome’s first ever PB vote took place on Saturday 11 March – when a room of local residents decided which events would receive funding from FTC in 2017.

Following on from this success, the next vote is all about the toilets in the park.

You’ll find lots of information on our website; and you’ll see some boards going up in the park this week, too.

Questions

If you have any queries about the vote and/or the options please let me know – this is an important vote for the future of the park; and we want to make sure that everyone has the information they need to make an informed decision.

We’ll also cover lots of questions in our FAQs

Voting

And just to confirm:
Voting will be online on the FTC website from Saturday 1 April – Sunday 16 April
Anyone living in Frome over the age of 10 can vote

And if you don’t have access to the internet – or you’d just prefer to do it the old-fashioned way – then you can register your vote in person at the Town Hall during the voting fortnight

I figure this may well be of interest to the school – and to parents.

Let me know if you’d like to meet up at all to discuss this in more detail.

Kind regards,

Chris Stringer
