Meet Tony, one of the local friendly faces who works from the Edventure Hub, our coworking space in Frome.
“I’m Tony McNicol. I help businesses tell their story with copywriting and photography. If you look hard enough, there’s an interesting and human story behind every business, even the ones that seem most ordinary!”
“It’s been a long and winding path! I studied Classics at university before travelling to Japan, where I worked as a freelance photographer and writer for over a decade.
“In the process, I learned Japanese, so when we moved back to Somerset in 2013, my wife and I set up a translation company. Very recently, I shifted back to writing and photography in the form of my new business, Story Focus.”
“Right now, I’m working with a two-Michelin-star chef in London to produce photos, copy and a website for his new business.
“I’ve also got two pro bono photography and writing projects on the go: one taking portraits of allotment owners in Frome, and another documenting the work of Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue, our local mountain rescue team.”
“I’ve worked freelance or for myself for almost my whole career, and it can be quite lonely. It’s great to get out of the house and meet people. I particularly enjoy learning about other people’s work.”
What do you do for fun?
“I play two sports: the Japanese martial art of kendo and, since last week, pickleball.”
What might people be surprised to learn about you or your work?
“I interviewed and photographed many celebrities in Japan, including sumo wrestlers, kabuki actors, pop stars, chefs, CEOs and the chap who played Pigsy in the 1970s TV series Monkey.”
