Here at Rivers we've been busy exploring natural phenomena through observation of our environment, practical exploration and design. We've been learning about native tribes and ways in which communities work together to live harmoniously with nature, the varying landscapes and the interconnectedness of the elements which are fundamental to life.

In maths, we have been busy looking at pattern and shape. The children worked well with 2D shapes and have been exploring symmetry and fractions. Yesterday we took our lesson outside to identify 3D shapes in our environment!

In Literacy, the children have been practising the joins between the lower case letters to build even greater confidence with this. We regularly review our phonics through reading sessions and short writing tasks.
We've also been learning about life on the farm and the tasks that need to be completed during the winter months. These lessons often include story telling of farm life many years ago for the children to compare how life on the farm has changed over time.

Volunteer Teaching Assistant opportunity - Rivers Home-Education

Do you have a passion for Steiner Waldorf pedagogy and enjoy working with children? Would it inspire you to work alongside a Steiner-trained Group Leader to help engender a love of learning within a community of home-educating families? Would you like to support our efforts to bring low-cost Steiner-inspired sessions to home-educating families in Somerset and Wiltshire?

Rivers Home-Education is looking for a volunteer Classroom Assistant to support our Class Three group (8- 9-year-olds) one or more days per week on a Monday, Tuesday (9:30-15:15) or Wednesday (9:30- 14:30) from the 31 October until the end of our Easter term.

We are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company that provides home-educating families access to low-cost Steiner Waldorf sessions in a small group setting. Our regular sessions enable home-educated children to experiences being part of a class as well as a wider community, learning to grow from each other's strengths and needs.

We are based at Stowford Manor Farm, near Farleigh Hungerford (under 20 minutes' drive from Frome and under 25 minutes from central Bath).

Volunteers will receive on-site mentoring from an experienced Steiner –trained teacher and Standard child Safeguardingtraining (completed online).

Rivers is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Rivers expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful applicants will require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and two references are necessary as part of our safe recruitment process as well as any checks from time spent working overseas. Rivers will organise and pay for DBS checks and safeguarding training and would ask for a minimum of one term (11 weeks) commitment.

Please contact: admin@rivershomeeducation if you would like more information or to apply.

In form drawing this week, we focused on crossing the mid point to create beautiful symmetry within our designs! Form drawing fine tunes hand-eye coordination and considers the importance of balance, pattern and measurement.

Practical experience is a key aspect of Steiner Waldorf education and what better way to learn about nature, measure, instructional texts and so much more than to work together to make a delicious crumble! 🍏

Lots of activity at Rivers this week! We've been revising our maths work on the four functions from class two and introducing the column method.

Measurement work has continued through story-telling of the Pharaoh's royal cubit alongside practical activities too! We compared and discussed our own measurements, made cubit rods and made predictions before measuring objects with them.

In literacy, the children have enjoyed listening to the fable of the 'Farmer and his Three Sons' and exploring the senses through imaginative writing. Diary entries gave the children the opportunity to explore the fable from the perspective of one of the characters. We also introduced similes this week, with a particular focus on the language introduced so far in our measurement block. ✨

Clay creations created an opportunity to use the language of measurement and comparison this week! We also had great fun orientating ourselves in space by creating plans which we will later use for recording measurements of our environment! :)

Class Three ❤️

Field study work was enjoyed by all as we spent time observing changes in the environment as part of our 'Farm' project.

We later discussed ways in which we could compare and measure objects, setting the scene for our work on measurement this term....more on that tomorrow!

What an amazing first day at Rivers Holiday Club!
Our day began with introductions and a gentle start to welcoming new friends 💚

Craft, games and story telling were carefully woven into the rhythm of the day and we concluded with a reflective circle time to share our experiences!

During this time, the children expressed how much they had enjoyed exploring the sensory qualities of the clay and beeswax in preparation for scene setting and dramatic script tomorrow! ✨
