Children in Year 3 had a brilliant biodiversity workshop last week, led by Frome Town Council. They were fantastic citizen scientists, exploring nature and collecting real data just like the experts!

They discovered some amazing facts, including:
🌳 A large oak tree can be home to around 2,300 different species.
🌿 1 in 6 animal and plant species in the UK are in decline.
🌺 If every house in the UK had a window box, together they would cover three times the area of all the country's nature reserves combined.

The children showed great curiosity, teamwork, and observation skills throughout the workshop. They were also able to see the 'Merlin' app in action. When they were listening to everything they could hear, Merlin identified 3 different bird calls and was able to name them, which the children thought was brilliant. Why not download it yourselves and see which birds you can identify near your homes or when you are out and about? 🐦🐦‍⬛🦉

Years 1 & 2 had a fantastic trip to Carymoor learning all about 'Superheroes of Nature'.

Children investigated and identified some pond-dipped creatures, went on a trail to find pictures of baby and adult pond animals, played a game to identify what badgers eat, learnt about caterpillars and butterflies and made their own nature caterpillar.

We also brought some clay back to school for children to make their own clay minibeast later this week.

Children were really super and had a wonderful time. It was very hot but children coped really well, having plenty of drinks and rest in the shade. 🐸🌳🐛🦋🦡🦗🪲🪳🐜

Ash class had a great trip to Fairfield Animal Centre this week, on their first school trip!

The children all enjoyed seeing the animals, spotting all sorts of different ones, including wallabies, alpacas, goats, donkeys, pigs, emus, sheep and even a peacock! They enjoyed eating lunch together under the shade of the trees and had loads of fun on the play park too.

Everyone was beautifully behaved, sensible and kind and we are so proud of them all! 🥰

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge launches on Saturday in libraries across Somerset. The Challenge this year is called ‘Read to the Beat’!

What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
The aim of the Summer Reading Challenge is to encourage children to read for pleasure. The challenge is to read six books over the summer holidays and children can sign up for free at any library in Somerset.

What do I have to do?
1. Visit the library and sign up with your library card – you will receive your free poster pack! If you don’t have a library card you can join for free at the same time.
2. Every time you read two books, go back to the library and they will give you two stickers for your poster.
3. After you’ve read six books, you will receive a certificate and a badge!

When does the challenge run?
This year’s challenge runs from Saturday 4th July until Saturday 12th September. The challenge is completely free and is open to children of all ages.
