Firstly apologies for the delay in getting this together!

My personal circumstances have changed so there are some slight changes to Happy Hands.

There will be a 6 week block of Happy Hands classes starting the week after October half term. These will be relaxed, drop in classes.

I will then be taking a break and introducing more focused Happy Hands classes around March time.

There will also be a get together, location and date to be confirmed, for adults who want to practice their BSL. This will become a regular thing from April time.

Please do not hesitate to ask any questions.

I will be reintroducing Happy Hands and myself over the next few weeks.

Thank you for bearing with me.

Please look out for us at workshops over the coming months.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

5 facts on sign language

1. BSL is the fourth most used language on the UK
2. There is not a universal sign language. Different countries have different sign languages
3. Sign language does not follow spoken language
4. Sign language uses more than just hand gestures. They use body language and facial expressions too
5. Babies pick up sign language in the same way they pick up spoke language

Did you know any of these facts?

Do you have any questions on these facts? Do any surprise you?

I'll be expanding more on these facts during this week.

There are advantages to learning BSL. Exposing your child to the language at a young age only has benefits. See previous posts for a few of those benefits. Do you have any questions on BSL? On Happy Hands? Or Deaf awareness?

Ask away.

Today the House of Commons passed the BSL ACT on it's third reading.

It now goes to the House of Lords for debate. This is happening on 25th March 2022.

Please take a minute, research the BSL Act to see why this means so much to so many people. Although massive steps have been taken recently to raise awareness, there is still so much more to do. So much more.

Deaf awareness tips #2

What to do in group situations.

Try to reduce background noise.

Try to speak one at a time so the person can follow the conversation.

Do not tell the person you will explain a conversation later rather than in the moment. This furthers the isolation and belittles the deaf person.

If it is a more professional person, ask the person what their preferred method of communication is. Would they prefer a BSL interpreter be present?

Deaf Awareness tips #1

Make sure you have the persons full attention.

Ensure you face the person and maintain eye contact.

Make sure you are stood in good lighting so the person can see you clearly.

Do not shout, use over-exaggerated gestures or lip patterns.

Speak normally, clearly and cut out the jargon.

I teach my child Makaton, which uses signs. Is that not the same thing?

No. Makaton and BSL are 2 very different things. Makaton was created for hearing people with communication or learning difficulties. Makaton uses signs, symbols alongside speech in spoken word order. It is not a language.

BSL is a language within it's own right. It has its own structure and grammer. Its uses lip patterns, body language, facial expressions and hand signs. It is a language used by deaf and hard of hearing people to communicate.

Makaton borrows signs from BSL but mostly are different.
