I wonder if it's time for a wee introduction....
I'm Kim, Founder and Principal of KDance.
Although KDance didn't actually start with a business plan. It started when I was 14 and discovered contemporary dance.
I'd grown up Highland dancing and loved so much about it, but contemporary was different. I loved the freedom, the creativity and the self-expression. I felt like I'd found my thing.
At the time there was a dance artist called Sandy working across what was then Banff and Buchan, bringing dance to young people throughout the area.
I remember thinking, "that's what I want to do."
Not just dance. I wanted to bring that feeling to young people here.
I grabbed every opportunity I could to learn, including travelling to Dundee and France, before eventually gaining my BA Honours degree in Dance and Creative Arts.
After university, life eventually brought me back to Fraserburgh and my Nanny kept encouraging me to start a dance class.
I genuinely didn't think anyone would come.
But eventually I took the chance and started one Saturday morning street dance class.
They came.
So I added another. Then another.
Eventually I introduced the thing I'd wanted to teach all along — contemporary dance.
They came to that too.
And somewhere along the way, KDance was born.
It's grown into something 14-year-old me could never have imagined, but the reason behind it hasn't really changed.
I want young people growing up here to have access to excellent dance education and opportunities. I want them to experience the confidence, creativity, freedom and belonging that dance gave me.
And I don't believe where we live should limit what's possible for them.
That's what started KDance.
And all these years later, it's still what drives me.
