Abstract

Knowledge production within the eld of business research is accelerating at a tremendous speed while at the
same time remaining fragmented and interdisciplinary. This makes it hard to keep up with state-of-the-art and to
be at the forefront of research, as well as to assess the collective evidence in a particular area of business
research. This is why the literature review as a research method is more relevant than ever. Traditional literature
reviews often lack thoroughness and rigor and are conducted ad hoc, rather than following a speci c metho-
dology. Therefore, questions can be raised about the quality and trustworthiness of these types of reviews. This
paper discusses literature review as a methodology for conducting research and o ers an overview of di erent
types of reviews, as well as some guidelines to how to both conduct and evaluate a literature review paper. It also
discusses common pitfalls and how to get literature reviews published.

Her research focuses on the identifying, isolating, and characterising of biologically active compounds from medicinal plants. Jez is a PhD student currently researching artificial intelligence in (AI) in Financial Mathematics, Stochastics and ICT Management at the Great Zimbabwe University. Jez’s research takes a deeper look into the protection of finance and reducing the form of risk. He also discusses the Black-Scholes-Merton (BSM) model and ways in which it could improve its usefulness. Stay tuned to hear more about Jez’s PhD journey, the research gap he aims to fill and his experience in tomato farming!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to Jez! Despite our technical issues we still powered through. 2. Why you should write a literature review
Consideration of prior, relevant literature is essential for all research disciplines and all research projects. When reading an article, independent of discipline, the author begins by describing previous research to map and assess the research area to motivate the aim of the study and justify the research question and hypotheses. This is generally referred to as the“literature review,” “theoretical framework,” or “re-
search background.” However, for a literature review to become a proper research methodology, as with any other research, follow proper steps need to be followed and action taken to ensure the review is accurate, precise, and trustworthy.

ABSTRACT: The phrase “research” refers to seeking knowledge. It is a scholarly and systematic search for relevant knowledge on a specified subject. The Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries defines “Research” as “A careful study of a subject, especially to discover new facts or information about it”. Research is a philosophy of systematic study that critically investigates several aspects of professional work, including development of prominent concepts that manage a particular process, and development and analyse novel theories. In accordance with Woody (1927), research includes identifying research problem, creating hypotheses, collecting, analysing, and assessing data and making inference. As a result, research is a distinctive contribution that advances the current knowledge via investigation, observation, comparison, and experimentation. To put it in a nutshell, research is the pursuit of knowledge through a methodical approach to problem-solving.
