Michael Hall Waldorf School

Michael Hall Waldorf School Michael Hall Waldorf School is over 100 years old and serves over 400 pupils, from age 0-18.

The Waldorf curriculum promotes intellectual, emotional, and practical growth through creativity, hands-on learning, and fosters a lifelong love of learning. One way of doing this is through the notion of – body, soul and spirit. Our rich and broad curriculum attaches equal importance to the crafts, the arts, and intellectual achievement. This artful approach to teaching is inspired by the work of

Rudolf Steiner and strongly underpinned by his deep understanding of child development. Pupils learn the right thing at the right time in terms of how each subject can support healthy child development. They learn how to think, not what to think and as a result they have the confidence to pursue life with purpose.

A recent report from the National Foundation for Educational Research identifies six Essential Employment Skills that will become increasingly important as technology and AI reshape the world of work:

Communication • Collaboration • Information literacy • Organising, planning & prioritising • Problem solving & decision making • Creative thinking

At Michael Hall, these aren't an extra layer added to education. They are developed through learning itself.

01 — Communication
Presenting ideas, performing, discussion, debate, writing and learning to listen give children opportunities to find their voice and understand different perspectives.

02 — Collaboration
Music, drama, group projects, practical work, festivals and everyday classroom life involve working with others towards something shared.

03 — Information literacy
Our Main Lesson approach asks pupils to engage deeply with a subject, ask questions, investigate, make connections and develop their own understanding — rather than simply collecting information.

04 — Organising, planning & prioritising
Longer-term projects, practical work, performances, presentations and independent study give pupils opportunities to manage their time, work through a process and take responsibility.

05 — Problem solving & decision making
From making something to approaching a mathematical problem, carrying out an investigation or navigating a group project, pupils regularly encounter situations where there isn't simply one answer.

06 — Creative thinking
Creativity runs through the curriculum — from art, music, drama and handwork to finding different ways to approach a problem, make connections and develop something of their own.

The NFER report makes an important point: these skills are not “soft skills” that children either have or don't have. They can be developed.

Perhaps that is one of the most valuable things education can do: give young people a strong foundation of knowledge while giving them opportunities to think, communicate, create, collaborate and act on their ideas.

Education for life. Not simply preparation for exams.

Congratulations to our GCSE and BTEC pupils! 🎉

After patiently waiting since June for the results, we were delighted to share in their moments of revelation.

We now look forward to welcoming those returning to join us for class 11, and wish all the best to those who are continuing their journey on different paths.

It has been another good year for our A Level pupils and our headline figures are impressive.

Almost half of the grades attained by our pupils, 47%, were between A* and B!

We are also in line with national average for the overall A* to C grade ranges.

We know that these grades do not define the fantastic young people who worked hard to achieve them; and we also know that the grades reflect only one aspect of our wonderfully broad, creative and nurturing curriculum.

We are all extremely proud of the group that are leaving us as well rounded, confident, happy, and caring young adults.

Well done to the class of 2026!

We were delighted to welcome Emma Dixie, Early Years Officer at East Sussex County Council, to Saplings at the end of last term for an audit of our two-year-old provision.

It was a wonderful chance for our Early Childhood team to reflect on the excellent practice happening every day in the department, celebrate what makes Saplings so special, and look at new ways to enrich the children's learning.

Come and see our setting for yourself: join us on 1st October for our Early Childhood Open Day.

The summer holidays offer children something increasingly rare: time to wonder, create, explore and simply be.

Whether climbing trees, building dens, reading a favourite book or discovering something new outdoors, these unhurried moments help nurture imagination, independence and confidence.

At Michael Hall, we value these qualities all year round, creating space for children to learn through experience, creativity, nature and meaningful engagement with the world around them.
