The Storyteller for the Earth project : brought together two acclaimed storytellers — Rona Mentari (Indonesia) and Roi Gal Or (United Kingdom) — in a cross-cultural performance to explores humanity's relationship with nature through folklore passed down for generations.
The project began with online workshops, collaborative sessions, and deep research, where both storytellers exchanged folk tales, cultural perspectives, and reflections on ecological themes. This collaboration deepened during an in-person artistic residency in Indonesia, where they refined their craft and built a richer, closer cultural dialogue. The result is a performance enriched by Wayang Suket (traditional visual storytelling) and live ethno-music from local musicians — creating an immersive experience where tradition and urgency meet.
This isn’t just about listening to stories. It is a creative response to the ecological crises, turning to timeless wisdom of Indonesian and British folklore to address climate anxiety, environmental degradation, and our lost connection to the land.
Presented with support from the Connections Through Culture Grant 2025 by the British Council — fostering creative collaboration and cultural exchange between artists across the UK and the Asia-Pacific region.

Sometimes my students ask me if I know my name ROI, is most famous for the acronym Return On investment). I often answer to explain why storytelling is indeed the best investment they will ever make.

Algorithms fight for seconds of your attention but great stories survive for centuries in our souls.

Stories only increase in value! Every time you practice telling them you and others can learn something new.

Stories compound interest - Tell one person and you have created a memory, if they tell three others you have a shared value and if they all continue sharing ten years later you have passed on an inheritance everyone can actually carry.

You can share your stories many times, and still get to keep them.

The best investments in our lives aren’t measured in pounds. They are measured in smiles, goosebumps, meaningful conversations, friendship bonds, and the number of times someone says, “Tell that story again.”

So what should you invest in? I would recommend - give yourself or your loved ones a true once upon a lifetime of a gift - more precious than gold…

Invite you to join them on a deep quest!
In times of collapse and transformation, when familiar ground gives way and long held certainties crumble, stories can offer us provocation, companionship and guidance.

In this two week course, we will explore our collective inheritance of oral wisdom traditions from around the globe, focusing on folktales and situating them in dialogue with our embodied histories and lived legacies.

Participants will be encouraged to meet folktales not as fixed relics, but as living ecologies, rooted in their culture of origin, exploring whether and how they can help us metabolise and address cultural and collective inherited traumas as well as face current realities.

As well as developing and honing our storytelling skills we will discuss questions such as :
What does old folktales wisdom have to teach us? What do these old stories need to shed, or be reimagined in order for them to be relevant for us now? And how they might help us compost what was once called ‘normal’ into new possibilities and imagined futures.

Through thought provoking and playful exercises we will open spaces for meaningful, courageous and honest conversations, we will be activating our imagination to welcome emerging images, words and stories to help us map possible pathways forward.
